Mixing drums, help !

Hey guys, I'm a newbie as it comes to mixing and I need your suggestions/opinions/tips. I just started mixing one month ago and yesterday I found the files from the french band "Still Rise" mixing contest, and I tried to mix the drums with the knowledge i got from this forum, but I'm not a bit happy with the result.. Please say something

Just for the record: Only the kick is sampled (60% sample, 40% original)

doesn't sound too shabby, definately not bad for a noob such as yourself . Buttttt, for the sake of putting in my 2 cents, I think this could use....

-some reverb
-the cymbals (and especially the hi hat) could use some more high end sizzle
-a tad more compression on the kick and toms (I like a squashed drum tone)

I just cant seem to make it sound "polished" like so many mixes I found here...

It needs more hi end. Everything is fairly muffled. Also there's some weird cutting out happening... Like a gate turning on too quickly.
