I've been curious, but does anyone does this? What I do is automate the drums to sound not much louder than the guitars and then I add the bass guitar and I do the same thing I do with drums, make it not much louder than the guitars. Then vox, synths and effects go next.
I'm always letting the rhythm guitars play. Let's say I have a somewhat slow drum beat, first I mute everything but the guitars and the drums, and then I make the drums sound loud and verby and when a double kick or blast beat part kicks in I just lower the snare and the kick drum. After that when I add bass it's the same principle and then vox goes the same and so on. All in relation to the rhythm guitars.
