Hi!

I'm mixing this old song Ola posted some time ago... I'm not really satisfied by now, can you guys share some critics?

Facts:

- by now I'm just working on "overall punchiness", so stuff like solo guitars etc are basically untouched, unedited etc

- I added some vocals taken from the producer edition of a well know band.. so I left it unedited, untouched, untreated (are just a placeholder, still they fit the song really well!). I left them untouched cause are obviously iperprocessed in the first place. If you guys think I must remove them for copyright issues, just tell me and I'll remove them.

- Overall i'm not satisfied, yea the mix it's somewhat punchy, but on my monitors it's not bad, still on other setups (car, stereo, mp3 player) it sounds "boxy": seems too compressed, in a way. My older mix were overcompressed and they pumped a lot, this seems not to pump but it's still really lifeless...

Can you give me some hints?

Can barely hear the crashes when the drums are riding on them during the verses (hell any part when they aren't used as accents). Vocals are super distracting because I can't discern any timing and relevance to the metering of the original song.

Snares threshold settings sound a bit heavy handed. I'd roll it back and drop the snare down a bit in the mix.

No... It doesn't work, and I haven't stolen anything... Infact, I posted clearly in the OP that 1- I can remove it on the spot with knowledge of copyright stuff 2- it's totally untouched and I put it just there for having a minimal "vocal track" to get the idea how the mix works...

Jesus christ, I clearly stated it.

What I can't really grasp is why I ask for critics on certain specific topics, listing all the flaws that I know are actually present, and what I get are comments about... the flaws I just mentioned and no minimal help on the things that I actually asked for.

Rob Logic have some good points for example... still.. since I have done no automation at all in the song, I WAS aware that some volume relations would need attention, just wanted to KNOW ABOUT overall frequency balance.. "punchier vs overcompressed" etc..

Anyway, I'm removing vocals, and spending some time wondering how this section works.. Some weeks ago I posted an entirely 100% "original" song, I got hundreds of views and 0 replies. No one saying "good", no one saying "it sucks", no one saying "you should improve this/that", no one asking for stuff like "how do you tracked this/that? What did you used for post production?" Guess I have to open a thread called "tse > lecto > recabinet > SD2.0" with a 20 second clip of a glorious cover... Then I would get lots and lots of replies... Bah
