MOLLY HATCHET. Any fans?

I love this fucking band! I have since I discovered them in 1983 as a freshman in high school. I'm 40 now. I love everything by them...but, especially since "Devil's Canyon" was released in 1996 because they are way heavier now. All albums after DC are very high quality, also. "Silent Reign of Heroes" - 1998, "Kingdom of XII" - 2001, and "Warriors of the Rainbow Bridge" are excellent spins. Bobby Ingram (guitar) and Phil McCormack (vocals) are potent songwriters and Bobby Ingram can fucking shred! This band is heavy enough to tour with a JUDAS PRIEST or an IRON MAIDEN easily and deserve a shot at such. Before anyone here decides to mock me or bust my balls, check these albums out. All are ass kickers! I'll be checking MH out with BLACKFOOT on Oct. 16th. Can't wait!

Sword, upon your recommendation I checked out their later catalog. You're right, it rocks! I'll have to pick some of this stuff up when I can. :kickass:

Bobby Barth (AXE) is singing for BLACKFOOT now. Rick Medlocke turned it down. Making a shitload more money with SKYNYRD. I'd love to see him back in BLACKFOOT, though.

Well, that's a decent replacement. I really loved Axe back in the day (particularly Offering).

But it still doesn't seem right. :)

Yep, I'm a fan. I actually saw them with Saxon long ago, great show. Last year I caught them at a little club in Macon, I think Dave Hlubek is the only original member now. I thought Bobby Ingram's guitar solo was sloppy and way too long, but his solos on the songs sounded fine. Still good but not as potent as they once were...

I have a soft spot for good ol' ass kickin' Southern rock, and I love Molly Hatchet. I remember reading in a Circus magazine before the debut came out, and they said MH were like Skynyrd meets Ted Nugent.
Saw them play with The Outlaws on the Flirtin' tour, and in one of the most weird touring combos, The Michael Schenker Group opened for them. The current version of MH only had Dave Hlubeck as an original member, but the rest of the "new" guys do justice to the MH sound.
Bobby Ingram has been with them since 1989 and John Galvin since 1985. Dave Hlubek returned in 2005. Bobby Ingram has also owned the name since about 1990 I believe.

Yeah, I am a Hatchet fan of the old and the new group. The first few albums are classic and even DJB return album No Guts … No Glory is great. But sadly no one has done a decent remaster of that album. The Sony and SPV version bite-the-big-one with flat tinny sound. As for the newer Hatchet, Devil’s Canyon is one of their best. By this point MH had no original members. But who cares when it’s this good. It may have been technically been a cover band, but it rocked.

I also liked Silent Reign Of Heros and to a lesser extent, Kingdom Of XIII. I even went so far as to buy the Japanese version of the latter album for the bonus track. But the quality of the songs has been steadily dropping since Silent Reign Of Heros. Kingdom Of XIII has some rather bland songs and I was utterly bored with Rainbow Bridge. But even worse, their live album Locked And Loaded and the subsequent 25th Anniversary Best Of Re-Recorded sucked the life out of some great songs. Proof that re-recording songs doesn’t always make them better. The production was fine but the energy and drive of the originals was gone. I think this band is losing the fire or drive that once made them great.

So call me a disappointed fan at this point. They recovered a little with the recent Flirtin’s With Disaster- Live CD and DVD. It’s an easy cash-in album by name and title alone. But at least they didn’t embarrass themselves.

As for Blackfoot, this band has certainly gone through some high peaks of greatness and depressing depths of weakness. The first couple of albums (No Reservations and Flyin’ High) are hard to come by. But they have some good songs and show promise of their later Atco albums (Strikes, Tomcattin’, Marauder, Highway Song – live, and Siogo). These five albums are some of the best southern hard rock recorded, including Molly Hatchet. The Japanese versions of the albums are damn near perfect in sound and mix. Easily surpassing the crappy sound of Wound Bird records. This is dismal failure of a reissue record company. Be wary of their CDs.

Sadly after Siogo, the band took a nose dive in song writing and sold-out to try and make radio friendly songs. Vertical Smiles is pop drivel. Even worse, Ricky Medlocke released a solo album titled Rick Medlocke & Blackfoot which was pure funk and disco. Ricky recovered a little with two hard to find solo/Blackfoot albums titled Medicine Man and After The Reign. The only original member being Ricky. Then Blackfoot disappeared until Ricky reappeared in Skynyrd and a reformed Blackfoot popped up sans Ricky but the other three original members (Hargrett, Spires and Walker) with Bobby Barth (of Axe). Sadly Spires died a few years ago. This version of Blackfoot released one recent DVD and CD titled Train Train. It’s a decent rock concert and shows the band still has some legs. I really enjoyed it.

As a side note, if you like Molly Hatchet, check out the original-era members project called Gator Country. MH members Bruce Crump (drums), Duane Roland (guitar), Steve Holland (guitar), Jimmy Farrar (vocals) and Riff West (bass). I don’t think they rock as hard as the current MH but it sounds pretty good to me.

And Duane Roland passed away in 2006, if I remember right...

I have yet to hear any Gator Country tunes...

The other funny thing about Molly Hatchet is they are really popular in Germany. Southern rock and Germany are not two things you normally associate together.

In fact, SPV provided the funding for the newer MH albums starting with Devil's Canyon and the band regularly tour Germany. Go figure.

You can put me down as another old school Molly Hatchet/Southern Rock fan. I love all the old classics and enjoy the current band too. I really like the song "Rainbow Bridge" and think it's as good as anything they've ever done. It was written for Ingram's wife who was like an unofficial bandmember when she passed away. Lot of emotion in Ingram's solo on that one. I think they do a great job carrying on the band's legacy.

Absolutely! And they went heavier to boot. This band does no wrong in my eyes!

If "Queen" can tour without Freddie Mercury and "Thin Lizzy" without Phil Lynott, why not?

Please note, the previous statement should not be interpreted as a positive statement in any way, shape or form.

But isn't Blackfoot touring without Rick Medlocke? If so, that ain't Blackfoot.

I've always liked Molly Hatchet. Saw 'em open for Triumph back in the day, and it was a fun show. I haven't heard much of the more recent material though.

I just saw them right here in Fredericksburg earlier this summer, not even 1/2 mile from my place. They did kick ass, plus I see they are playing at Jaxx on the 17th of October as well. May have to try to go to that one.

I'll have to go throw some pictures up from that Fredericksburg show.

However, the local paper (I am actually pretty good friends with Alex Russel, the photographer that took the those shots) got some pretty sweet pictures:

In fact, on picture #3, you could see me directly underneath the Confederate Flag those two guys were holding up. :kickass:

Definitely a huge fan of Molly Hatchet, although I never really kept up with them after DJB left the band (I've checked up on the Ingram/McCormack version here and there over the last several years via the internet, but I never actually bought any of their recordings).

Glad to see Dave is back with the band, as well as John Galvin.

One of the handful of times I saw Molly Hatchet was at Center Stage Theater back in 1989, and I met the band outside the venue (right out front on the sidewalk, where everyone queues up to enter the building for ProgPower):

As you can see, I wasn't actually planning on meeting the band, so I got them to sign the envelope my ticket came in

The top part of the envelope was signed by Danny Joe Brown and Riff West; the bottom part was signed by Bobby Ingram.

I also got a couple of picks...I thought it was strange when Danny Joe handed me a pick with his name on it, since I'd never actually seen him playing a guitar

I had seen them one time previous to this show, and I only saw them one more time after this show when DJB was still with them (I believe it was in 1992 or 1993, and it was basically Molly Hatchet featuring DJB and Bobby Ingram, by this point...but Danny Joe sounded great, as always, and I sure am glad I went, since I had no idea it would be the last time I would see him perform).

I would definitely love to see Gator Country...in addition to seeing some of the old-school Molly Hatchet dudes, Paul Chapman (of UFO and Waysted fame) is also in the band:
