more musical goodness....

I don't get the hate...they are doing something different. I guess people are afraid of different, but given the clientele on this forum you'd think that would not be the case.

I don't get it either, but at this point I just shrug my shoulders and move on. Personally, I'm a big fan of a cappella music, and while Van Canto probably isn't the most amazing example of the genre (in that they use a drummer), they are definitely interesting for playing in this genre. I find the argument of "if they used instruments they wouldn't be anything special" really beside the point.

While I guess I understand the novelty appeal of this band, I just don't like them at all really. It's kind of the way I feel about Apocalyptica. I know what they're doing...it's just not interesting to me.

I wouldn't because I enjoy the actual musical instrumentation involved. I'm a huge Enya fan as well as Clannad, Loreena, Iona, Secret Garden, etc.

Props for returning out of the blue to take a shot at me though. I've missed your sparkling personality. How is AARP life treating you? Told any kids to get off your lawn lately?

Wow, was the personal attack really necessary? I questioned what I thought was a hypocritical statement regarding a style of music. You responded with a valid answer but then chose to make it nasty. I truly was not trying to take a personal shot at you.

Anyway, back on topic, based on your response, it's not a cappella music that you find distasteful but rather Van Canto in general. Which is fine, as you have pointed out many times, people are allowed to post their musical opinions.

Personally, I see little difference in the a cappella voice of Enya vs. Van Canto's singers as a valid "instrument". Either is interesting and fun in small doses.

I'll end by saying I truly wish you and the wife well. Stay warm and safe in that deep freeze coming your way.

Honestly, I wouldn't consider my reply nasty and sorry you took as such. It was just a friendly jab back using a bit of black humor based on your frequent geriatric musical preferences ( I KID! I KID!) and our illustrious history together. I don't even know your age. :) You have always been a supporter of the festival even when you don't like the majority of the bands booked and I appreciate it.

To further clarify the issue.... It's all about the context of A Capella. It could be in a Celtic atmosphere or the harmonies on Seven Bridges Road and I will go apeshit over it.. I draw the line at the gimmick of using your voice as a musical instrument like Van Canto does. It's gloried beat-boxing to me. They are very talented at what the do and I can appreciate the skill involved. That doesn't mean I still don't think it sucks though.

I appreciate the end note. We are hunkered down awaiting that crap that just passed through your state.

Bringing a little Wisconsin to all my friends down South. :Smokedev:

Seriously though, be safe everyone, that's alotta ice they are predicting even by (damn) Yankee standards....
