Oh dear don't hate me for posting this crap! Maybe I shouldn't post but fuck it I don't care you'll have to humour me.

You must admit they do a great job here on La Isla Bonita. Came out a few years ago on the Sintrade album which is actually a great album if you haven't heard it.

Next is a band I've actually never heard of until seconds ago. Ascension are a Scottish power metal band. They cover Roxette's Listen to your heart. Most of you are gonna hate it badly but despite some high note vocal problems it's actually a perfect power metal anthem that could have been written by Helloween or Starovarius in their hayday.

PS I'm not gonna post the Katy Perry one as everyone knows about it already although that's not a really cover as her vocals remain.

There's also Northern Kings which have essentially made this their MO.
I figure everyone here already knows about 'em but what the heck.

I am going to go on the record and say i'm not a fan of any of the singers featured. there's always just something ...Off....

The La Isla Bonita cover actually was pretty good. I enjoyed that. Old school Madonna ftw.

Ascension's cover would be better if the high notes weren't so wimpy sounding. I really like that Roxette tune, and it's somewhat disappointing to hear it sung without any power. The drums sounded strange to me, too. Wimpy high notes aside, it was a pretty fair cover. Not stellar, but not terrible, IMO.

Northern Kings' cover of Take On Me was a bit of a clusterfuck.

I can't believe no one has posted this piece of work yet:

I tend to like this version a lot better. Plus Fabio on vocals!!

And who can forget Gamma Rays cover of Pets Shop Boys "Its A Sin"

Northern Kings had some nice covers and some absolutely disasters. The cover of Don't Stop Believin was great as I recall. Also the Brother in Arms cover had great orchestration as I remember again. But some of the covers were absolutely painful like the Radiohead cover Creep. That was a pure nightmare!

Northern Kings is best when they play mid and up tempo. When they try to slow down a song, like I Should Be So Lucky, or I Just Died In Your Arms, it's just painful. And those two songs had potential and have never really been covered well by a metal band.

You know what song really deserves a hot power metal cover? Holding Out For a Hero. It's been done by a few obscure power metal bands, but there hasn't been a good version yet. But with that song's already high-tempo beat and powerful vocals, a good power metal band could just kick serious ass.

Hopefully that will be one of the songs Northern Kings does on the next release.

I'm personally a big fan of Angel Dust's cover of Seal's "Killer," Angra's cover of Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights," Dokken's cover of Three Dog Night's "One," Hammerfall's cover of The Knack's "My Sharona," Helloween's cover of Abba's "Lay All Your Love On Me," Judas Priest's cover of Joan Baez's "Diamonds And Rust," and Pagan's Mind's cover of David Bowie's "Hallo Spaceboy."

Stay metal. Never rust.

I Just Died In Your Arms,

had potential and have never really been covered well by a metal band.

Powerworld, and Masterstroke have done decent Metal versions of this song IMO.

The above version of Roxettes "listen To Your Heart is "ok" but it has been done MUCH better with Rick Altzi on vocals while in the band FREQUENCY. It was a Japanese bonus track.

Gothic Knights does a smoking version of Duran Duran "Hungry Like A Wolf", and Avalon does a sweet version of "Kyrie".

I would also recommend hearing Jaded Heart doing Phil Collins "Easy Lover" which is awesome!

I do a special every year for my radio show called "POP SONGS GONE WILD" and have played a ton of excellent pop songs metalized!

Also check out Seven Witches doing "Flesh For Fantasy"!

Found a really cool power metal cover of Ultravox's The Voice by the Italian band The Prowlers. Yes they were an Iron Maiden tribute band originally. Anyway the cover is just awesome and the song lends itself to power metal very well. Actually the original song from Ultravox is great and probably better than this.
