James: stellar, this * is definitely one of my favorite mixes from you!

Wow. this is probably my favourite thing I have heard from you James. What guitar amps and drums were used? Really love it!
thanks!...Amps: rhythms were 4 tracks thick... used 6505+ on all 4, then re-amped tracks 1 and 2 again through the Krankenstein. solos are Madison Divinity. The Drums were a Pearl Master Custom set except for a DW sandwhich snare, and was miced with Audix D series except for top of snare which was a 57, and Nueman KM184's for OH's and AKG 4051's for hat and ride. tracked through an SSL 4K, but a couple tracks were through AMEK 9098.

thank you Lasse, and yes... you hit the nail on the head there.

Awesome vox recording  but fake sounding drums...
not quite. toms are original. snare is enhanced, kicks are replaced.:Smug: this was a nice kit, recorded in a killer room, with excellent pres, and a consistent drummer. they sound like they are supposed to. suits the style, suites the band.. and compared to quite a frew very "big" bands in the genre, produced by "big" engineers.. they sound downright organic.... which is no surprise considering that except for kick you're hearing plenty of the real kit in the room.

Thanks James - I noticed you did a similar thing on a previous mix with running the same 2 tracks through 2 different amps. Are the Krankenstein reamps blended underneath the others? Does it make a lot of difference to the final tone? Like, as opposed to having a third take and having that through the Krank?

Also, the drums sound great, you can tell you have engineered it well, and there is nothing really fake as far as I'm concerned. I'm really finding a lot of luck using DW snares at the moment, yet another great sounding example of one.

just to clarify, and hopefully fully answer your question, we tracked 4 separate takes for the guitar sound... and all 4 with the 6505+... later i took the first 2 of those and re-amped them through the Krank.. and the krank is lower than the 6505+... i just like the smooth top end of the krankenstein and use those tracks to blend some of that in with the raw balls of the 6505+.

for additional clarification regarding the drums... yes, i did use samples.. and you can hear them.. in fact the kick is all sample... but you are also hearing a great deal of the real drums, as they were recorded.... the sample use is neither overdone nor inappropriate. the toms were only replaced here and there as needed with hits from the same kit, recorded in their own PT session for use replacing weak hits and hits with too much cymbal beed... like at the end of a roll when it goes to a crash that's near the last tom in the roll. the snare is about a 50/50 blend with some samples i've used before. it works for this band and for this style.

Nice! Yeah, those vocals have something special going on there both in quality and his voice/style. What mic was used? :kickass:
yeah, the vox came out great on this.... a big part of it really was just working very closely with the singer, and taking our time... he's a hungarian immigrant and has still some accent things ... some of which work great and give his voice a cool character.. and others, like pronouncing a "d" rather than a "th", as in the words "there"(dere).... he really was concentrating on enunciation to avoid those not-so-cool sounding things but at the same time i kept coaxing him to sound "viscous" and "blasphemous"... or "fierce".. things like that.... he also projects really well but not overly loud.. certainly not quiet.. but not so loud as to strain too much.

the recording chain for the vox was important as well of course, SM7 > Distressor > ADL600

This is part of what I was referring to. Reminds me of back in the day listening
(and thrashing) to the classics like Destruction, Kreator, Coroner and most noticeable of all Sepultura. It's definitely cool to hear the accent come through. Like you said...character.

You should get into video recording your sessions and posting clips. :heh:  :erk:
