Add me to the list of those who love Steve Rothery and Arjen Anthony Lucassen. If I would add anyone else to the list, it would be Tom Phillips and Scott Loose of While Heaven Wept. Their leads really ring out, and when they play in unison, it's downright eerie. Scott also plays in the Virginia-based band Brave, and he gets to take more of a lead role in that band.
I'm also a huge Joe Satriani fan. Though he gets categorized as a shredder, he's really more about playing memorable melodies than playing at a mile a minute.
One final addition to my list is Alec Fuhrman, the original guitarist for the long-defunct Magna Carta band Cairo. He was equal parts Steve Howe and Steve Rothery, with a fairly intense approach to rhythms for progressive rock. To my knowledge, he hasn't released anything since Cairo's second album, "Conflict And Dreams," and that's a shame. If you haven't checked him out, I would recommend doing so.
