I liked a little of what I heard from Ildjarn, but people have told me I need to listen to an album of Ildjarn because the music is supposed to be heard as that.

I don't think the song "Ruin Under a Burning Sky" can speak for the band's whole discography.

Demilich always creeps me out to a certain extent. Whenever I listen to them, I always get the feeling that aliens (the band members) are going to abduct me and perform strange sexual experiments on my body.

Other bands that come to mind are Beherit, Darkspace, Paysage d'Hiver, Dolorian, Wormphlegm, Urfaust, Blut Aus Nord, Godflesh, and others.

Not metal, but I find dark ambient to be scariest of any genre. Lustmord comes pretty much top of the pile when instilling a deep seated sense of fear and dread.

Blut Aus Nord can be terrifying at times - especially in 'The Work Which Transforms God'.

EDIT: I can't believe I forgot this... Diagnose: Lebensgefar - Transformalin. It's a side project of the guy in silencer and all the music on this album was made as part of his rehabilitation from his mental illness. lemme tell you - you can fucking tell. A frighteningly honest insight into an unstable mind.

Older Ancient Rites stuff can be pretty evil. They have a pretty savage sound.

Late at night when drunk Abruptm/Sunn/DSO/Blut Aus Nord can be kinda nice but they're only really at all creepy if reading decent horror books.

Same really, Desiderii Marginis/Lustmord/Atrium Carceri/Raison d'être are all great.

I know I mention these guys way too much but The Axis of Perdition is the most disturbing band I've ever heard.
