Movie "Edge of Darkness" - Question about ending?

Why did Ray Winstones character end up kill the guys at the end. I must've missed an important part of the movie.

Danny wasn't much in this film but I did like him in 30 Days of Night.

The characters played by Ray and Mel didn't know each other before his daughters murder did they? I doubt it since he had to see his license.
