Music of Massive compression artifacts?

I hate to make this post, because Anthrax is easily my favorite band, and has been for 10 years. But, I feel it should be stated. I bought MOMD today, and am ecstatic about my purchase. This concert in Chicago was great. Audio wise, this is probably one the top 5 sounding live cd's I've ever purchased. Everything sounds perfect and clear, and it really feels like you're there, moshing about in the pit. The extras on the disc are great, especially the Alex Ross featurette. It really feels like there was a lot of time put into this disc, as opposed to Attack of the Killer A's, where the bonus features and concert footage seemed a little thrown together. Hell, the disc is almost worth purchasing just for seeing the bit about Rob's "super" Subway sandwich.

So, it's all good, right? No, it's really not. First off, the video isn't anamorphic. This doesn't matter at all unless you have a HDTV, so I can understand them leaving that out to save some money. The problem is, is that not only is the video not anamorphic, there are some HORRIBLE compression artifacts from some of the shots. The reason why I say some, is that most of the shots from the side of the audience seem fine, or they're over so quick that's there's not time to notice. The REALLY, REALLY bad shots are generally of John from straight out in the audience, in which the video pixels up like bad internet porn. This may not be noticeable on a smaller tv set, but when you're watching it on a 47" Widescreen HDTV, it dampens the mood a bit. Also, I want to make a point that I have no problem whatsoever with the art direction. All of the cinematography is great, the problem is the clowns that digitized the video from the cameras in the first place, before the editors ever sat down at the table.

Again, I love this DVD. I just want to get a hold of whomever did the analog to digital transfer of the video and ring their neck, because they make the band look like rank amateurs, and that is not at all what they need right now.

Peace

Yup, progressive scan. And while there are some shots in there that are done on purpose, what I'm talking about is definitely NOT on purpose. There's nothing artistic about John's head and Charlie's drumset ending up blocky as hell. Basically, nothing I think is specifically Anthrax's fault, it's just whomever they had do the analog to digital conversion did a real lazy job for some of the shots. Also, there's some artifacts when the lights on stage are out, and it's just John talking towards the beginning, and there's only 5 actual shades of Black used for the whole screen, which makes the shot look "Blotchy". I haven't tried watching it on my non HDTV yet, so I don't know how noticeable these things are on a regular set. If you want to see a good example of what I'm talking about, watch the easter egg of Charlie's drum solo. Now, that may have been done on purpose, because it's an easter egg, and because it's SO bad in that particular shot. Maybe I'm just being picky, but I've been watching DVD's since 97, and this has always been an issue to watch out for, where studios sometimes half-ass the transfer from the master tapes. I remember the first release of Highlander was really bad about this. I never bought it because people complained so much.

I did notice on the extra features that the video was somewhat like VCD quality. I didn't notice it on the concert footage though. They did put a lot of effects on the footage, that in my opinion, didn't need to be there. The audio is fucking excellent! I can't complain about the dvd. I have waited a very long time to have a concert video of Anthrax with John Bush. Overall, I still give it an A+.

:err: Look like amateurs?! :hotjump: I think you possibly expect too much by wanting theatrical-quality video for a heavy metal live concert DVD :Smug:. That's in my oppinion of course.

It looks beautiful to me, I haven't noticed the visual "fuck ups" if you want to call them that. The visual effects I've seen look to be all purposely added. Not that they aren't there, I just don't care. But I think you need to rethink saying the DVD makes them look like amateurs... it is a concert afterall, not a movie. :)

And in my oppinion, the featurettes' "visual quality" doesn't matter either... once again, its not a movie, so I don't expect a 4 man camera crew following them around with those mics-on-a-stick (by the way, those things are cool) :loco: with extra sharp video quality and crispy clear sound.

This isn't Titanic

Sorry if I sound like I'm being aggressive, but I'm watching the DVD now and looking at it and going "How can they say it looks so bad?"

The good heavily outweighes the bad though I think, heavily.

Stage right balcony shot looks like crappy Canon ZR 70 camcorder! (no, it wasn't me) Fortunately they never show it for more than 2 seconds at a time.
I think it's the red and the blue lights to a lesser extent causing it. That seems to be the only time it's like that. Again, i'm not complaining, because it's the best Anthrax thing EVER.

Yeah, I can't complain. And YES, the red lights SUCK! Slayer's WAR AT THE WARFIELD suffers from excessive red lights. So does basically anything with two much red light.

YES EXACTLY. That is what I didnt like about War at the Warfield. I have a 53 inch widescreen HDTV and there are some parts that are blocky, but the whole DVD kicks so much serious ass, I dont mind. It sure beats all the bootleg DVDs I have
