Really not interested in metal with this particular thread...

I'm willing to give anything you think fits the description a shot, I will post a few examples of things I know and enjoy though.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Murder Ballads
Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska (I love this album, it was recommended to me on this board a while back and it's been growing ever since)
16 Horsepower - Sackcloth N Ashes (dont care for woven hand as much)
Those Poor Bastards

Got some for you Krow:

And here's some Springsteen from his album The Ghost of Tom Joad:

Townes Van Zandt is my favorite singer-songwriter (not that I have much experience with the genre)

"When I die I dont want no part of heaven. I would not do heaven's work well. I pray the devil comes and takes me to stay in the fiery furnaces of hell."

Holy shit the hair on my arms and neck stood right up through that.

Man's Gin is great too... much better than the guys metal band, to be honest. He reminds me a bit of Godsmack's singer's clean vocals early in his career, and I dont mean that in a bad way.

Checking out TVZ now...

Edit: That was pretty good too, got a particular album to recommend lateralus?

He was sorta a childhood thing for me so I never got around to specific albums actually. I love the Be Here To Love Me compilation and it really does have some of everything, and Live At The Old Quarter is the best for just straight acoustic.

Also you shouldn't really expect every song to be so dark and brooding but, like many similar singer-songwriters, a lot of his stuff definitely leans that way.

Yeah, that song has amazing lyrics.

Thought of another guy (Mark Lanegan, who use to sing for Screaming Trees; these songs are all from his album Field Songs):

And Also the Trees might be what you're looking for.

Christian Death's Sexy Death God has some very dark, brooding music. It's a very underrated album too, combining their deathrock style with strong vampyric undertones, and an almost cinematic quality.

David Bowie's track "I'm Deranged" set the mood perfectly in the film Lost Highway and I can't think of a better song suited for night-time driving.
