Hi. I am the programmer for http://www.musicinpublic.com/ -- where I am building a free music player that is completely legal. It is completely legal because it is a front end interface for YouTube, which does all of the copyright checking. Source code is being published on http://www.osdata.com/ so that anyone can build a similar free music player.

The reason I am here is because one of the ways that I am testing my player is by creating a metal channel. Although I enjoy metal music, I don't qualify as an expert in metal and I am seeking the advice of real metal fans on what songs should be included in a free music player.

You can reach me through the contact link on the music player web site or recommend a good area on this web site for posting and answering this question. I look forward to your suggestions and recommendations.

Thanks much.

Sorry, but this is a problem. YouTube does not check all songs uploaded for copyright violation. That said, the songs provided so far seem to be a mixture of official music videos, which are usually ok, and cover art-ed uploads of popular songs already featured in music videos, so I doubt you would run into problems there. However, if you wanted to include a selection of songs on par or wider than whatever other online music streaming sites give (say, Pandora), it will not be maintainable through YouTube links for the aforementioned problems of copyright.
