Mustach - Parasite!
Regain Records - RR110 - November 2006
By Brandon Strader
Mustaches are possibly the coolest thing a man can get (even some women are getting them now), and everyone is always talking about them... So logically a band called Mustach would be awesome, yes? This theory is very true. This Mini-CD entitled Parasite! displays the heavy metal prowess of Mustach, a band with only three full-length albums since being formed in 1998. They fuse traditional sounding heavy metal riffs together with a more modern sounding vocal performance with great vocal melodies which results in a sound that is both classic and contemporary. The vocalist has quite a voice, and he seriously screams his clean vocals with such a gusto as to get that natural kind of vocal distortion that heavy metal bands love to use so much. Of course he's no Dio, but he's good at his own style. "Nailed To Pain" is a great opener with the clean, echoing guitars fading in to suddenly drop and be replaced by thrashing heavy metal riffs, and skillful percussion.
The percussionist uses a lot of toms and really pulls out some fantastic fills. His hat and cymbal work is somewhat comparable to Mike Portnoy, which is easy enough to pick out when the verse of the first song whips into a progression similar to something you may have heard from Dream Theater in the past. Near the end of the song, the guitarist whips out his axe and lays down a righteous rock 'n' roll solo as the rhythm continues to thrash relentlessly, beckoning metalheads everywhere to band their heads with reckless abandon. "My Disorder" continues in a much slower-paced fashion with the powerchords really being crunched out. Apparently, this is the "stoner rock" part mentioned in the press sheet. I am not a stoner, so I won't pretend to know how to use this track to its full potential, but I'm sure some of you out there know. Don't worry, I won't tell anyone. The song does feature mesmerizing sounds and hypnotizing riffs; perhaps that has something to do with it... And the vocal performance is very inspired and well done. The ending of the song breaks into a thrashing segment with the vocalist singing in a gruff tone with a bit of distortion on his vocals that will probably wake you out of your stonedness, or perhaps freak you out depending on how baked you may be.
Mustach are kickin' butt and taking names with this mini-CD full of great riffs and plenty of melodic guitar leads and solos. This heavy metal is so potent, it will make you wear leather pants and stop wearing shirts. It will cause you to grow your hair to unimagineable lengths, and maybe even pick up your guitar and start making your own stuff. Indeed, Mustach is one of those bands that can influence the young guitarists and show them the glory of heavy metal, causing a worldwide display of heaviness. The included live track is about 3 times longer than the normal tracks on Parasite! with a surprisingly small amount of that time being taken by the crowd applausing. The production is really great on this recording, so there's no way it is a bootleg. It sounds like a professionally recorded and mixed piece with an audio quality equal to that of the studio-recorded songs on this mini-CD. They also included a music video on the disc of the title track, "Parasite". The quality is ridiculously high for this 2 and a half minute song with the file size being 102mb. The video is so clear, it almost looks like you could reach out and grab the band! They all look really cool too, but more importantly, there are a lot of hot chicks in this video. They are dressed scantily, and they bounce back and forth with the music...
