My best work yet! Death metal for fans of Exhumed, Impaled, etc,...

Coffin Dust is a band from Philadelphia. I recorded this over the weekend and as far as I'm concerned, this is my best work yet.

As the notes on the site say, I don't normally master things and accidentally clipped one of my Nebula plugins while I was doing it. You'll hear the audio cut out briefly twice, I think. This will be fixed but it might be a few days and I'm excited so... here it is.



I did some things a little differently with this one. The room mics are up a lot higher than I normally put them and the guitars' sm57/R121 blend is actually weighed in favor of the 57, which absolutely sings through my recently-modded GAP Pre 73.

^ Record everything with an amp sim and SSD and have it sound like every other metalcore song recorded in the past 5 years. Oh i almost forgot about the usage of sub drops. I'm not entirely serious as there are many guys on here that know their shit, its just from what i've seen the rate my mix/tone section gets a lot of attention from noobs wanting presets and such from songs that sound identical.

Edit: Sorry, I can't really comment on the mix as i'm listening through the speakers on my macbook. You kind of just snagged me with the thread title.

I can't say I'm a big fan of the bass tone, too clanky for my liking. Is there a layer of the singer snorting under his main vocal? The toms and snare sound really far away to me. I am really digging on the guitars though.

I think the snare could use more attack, it's getting buried a little bit. Sounds pretty cool tho, definitely different from what i'm used to mix-wise.

Revson: I didn't exactly love the bass tone either but it was what he wanted. I compressed some of the attack out of it, you should have heard it before! And there is a layer of snorting under the vocals at times. I agree about the toms and snare sounding a little far, it's the result of the loud room mics. I'm going to work on it a little later to bring out a tighter, closer snare and toms sound.

Dave: I live and work out of South Philly, I call my place BS1. Do you play in any bands or go to shows? I run phillymetal.com and play guitar/vocals for Woe. What studio are you working out of in Bristol?

There it is. Snare is brighter and feels "closer," toms have way more depth behind them thanks to fixing an error with the close mics; drum, guitar, and master busses all have console emulation set; brightened the drums and then turned down the high-frequency EQ applied during the master. Removed one of the compressors from the master, making it louder and also fixing that annoying clipping/cutout that was going out. There's a general adjustment of levels between all instruments, too.

After comparing it to Impaled's "Mondo Medicale," I'm thinking that a guitar tone with a bit more grit to it would be a wise move next time. It sounds good now. A little too good.
