My Dying Bride: Worth Exploring?

turn loose the swans was my favorite metal album for two years or so. that is their landmark album and still my favorite by the band.

I agree...far and away the BEST My Dying Bride album. It is, in fact, the only MDB album I listen to consistently to this day. Pure and simple - it is an evil, dark and depressive masterpiece. It has it all. Romanticism, Funeral doom-like riffing, sadness, fast-paced riffing, some of the most amazing death growls I have heard and moments of pure, haunting splendour when the vocals become clean. Aargh, Your River is still possibly one of my all-time favourite heavy tracks out there.

"34.788% complete" was an experimental step and it deserves all the praise it gets. listen to that one after you hear one or two of their classic doom albums.

and those who say mdb is emo should snort anthrax and die. mdb is about pure tragedy. aaron writes some stunningly beautiful lyrics.

i highly recommend these 3 albums:

Turn Loose The Swans
The Angel And The Dark River
A Line Of Deathless Kings

if you want to check them songwise, try these:

The Cry Of Mankind
Your River
Crown Of Sympathy
My Hope The Destroyer
To Remain Tombless
Love's Intolerable Pain
A Doomed Lover
For My Fallen Angel

My favorite band, I've got their full discography (cds, demos and eps), I would recommend "songs of darkness, words of light" since almost all of my favorite songs are on that cd.
Actually My Dying Bride started out more death metallish but after the second demo they suddenly changed their music, dunno why actually but altough their newer doom is better, the old death metal isn't that bad either.

other favorite doom bands of mine:
- anathema (as mentioned many times before)
- Inborn Suffering: a french band who recently released their first cd "Worldless hope". That cd owns your mortal soul! The first song on it, "This is who we are", is really addictive
- Paradise lost

I was slightly thrown off by their name, sounding emo

I was working under the same impression.....weird. Maybe its the self-referential name, can't put my finger on it.

I listened to these guys a while ago but couldn't get into them. Maybe I'll give them another shot. Or maybe doom just isn't my thing. *Puts on some Carpenters*

Wow, this is a lot to sort through! You guys are awesome.

TBH, I'm not sure what I'm looking for yet. I wasn't sure that doom was really my thing, but I've been sort of meandering in that direction, following a sort of "recommended if you like" web....Opeth to Katatonia to Daylight Dies to MDB. I've also been getting into metal with atmosphere as opposed to stuff with killer riffs, sick solos, etc.

Anathema's been in my "Saved For Later" folder at eMusic for about a year and a half. Apparently I should check them out, too.

It seems like most people are advising starting with "Turn Loose the Swans", so I think I'll start there. I'll check out what sadguru posted, too. My downloads refresh on Monday, so I'll let you all know what I think.

Also, I have a similar experience to Tubbs. When MDB (who I first misread as DMB....VERY different) was first suggested to me, I thought they were an emo/hardcore band. Probably was confusing them with MCR. The name does sound like those that emo bands tend to favor....

Cool, keep us updated. In the package I sent you, the song called "The Crown of Sympathy" is from Turn Loose the Swans. Check it out before buying it, it might not be your thing. I know I much, MUCH prefer The Dreadful Hours (Aaron's farorite) and Songs of Darkness...

Good album, also contains what might be the all-time best My Dying Bride song, "For My Fallen Angel". "Fou You" and "A Kiss to Remember" are also classics.

I LOVE all three of those, but nothing else. i think the sound gets old kinda fast, like with black sabbath, the drudging (that a word?) riffs get boring.
