My Ruin vocalist / founder Tairrie B. Murphy has checked in with a message and new music:
“Please join me in wishing my dear friend Jack Osborne a very Happy Birthday. I adore Jack and was honored to join forces with him and his rad band, Call To The Void, to create magick together with this haunting rock duet cover + video of ‘A Girl Like You’, which we are excited to share on this special day.
Our darkly playful, amplified interpretation of the classic Edwyn Collins ’90s hit. While it’s clear Mr Collins is singing about a love interest, for us, it’s not a romantic story but it is certainly a love story, with love and respect for each other and each other’s art.
I first met a young Jack in 2003 when he attended a My Ruin Official show at Highbury Garage in London. The connection was immediate and infinite, with an unspoken understanding that transcended the usual fan-artist dynamic. Over the next two decades, our friendship grew, deepening into a strong bond and mutual admiration for each other which echoes in the cryptic language of this evocative timeless love song.
After attending many shows over the years, Jack was invited to join My Ruin on tour. First as a friend, then as a merch man and part of the crew, eventually singing on stage with me in cities across the UK, Paris, and at the iconic Whisky A Go-Go. As Jack honed his craft, I championed and encouraged him to start his own band. With an ocean between us we sustained a strong, loyal relationship which has stood the test of time. What began with a single encounter at a concert in 2003 has now come full circle with us as musical allies in the studio.
This video represents the coming together of two friends and a reflection on our history and connection over the past 2 decades. Created and edited by Jack, it was shot at Asylum Chapel, an enchantingly distressed and deconsecrated church, creating a moody religious backdrop for the song and iconic visuals. A beautiful crumbling symbol of a bygone era in Peckham, South London with additional footage of me by Mick Murphy, TourBusLive.com and Marcelo Palomino.
