I couldn't put Metallica in any of my top lists of all time... I'd feel too biased. But they definitely wouldn't feature in the top 10 anyway. They're my favourite band, but their one song that I think I would be able to put in a list such as this, "One", isn't as good as any of these songs by a long shot :)

I may be a fanboy, but I'm a reasonable fanboy ;)
 
The Tea Party's cover of Paint It Black is the shit. I prefer it to the original. What a band.

I am listening to Within Temptation, have you heard them? Female vocals with huge choruses and awesome melodies, big backing orchestra, good stuff. The Silent Force has to be one of my fav albums, I think you would like it since you are big on the ballads and big vocal stuff.
 
I like The Boxer more than Bridge Over Troubled Water, but Paul Simon is one of the best American songwriters of the 20th century. Check out The Bangles' cover of Hazy Shade Of Winter if you haven't already :).
