Maritz® Poll: 'Tis The Season To Be Frugal
Americans Plan To Spend Less This Holiday Season
Americans plan to spend less money on gifts this holiday season than last season, according to a recent Maritz Poll. On average, Americans said they will spend approximately $788 on gifts this year, a drop from last holiday season's estimated average of $845.
In a related question, 25 percent said this year's projected holiday payout will be less than they spent last year; 61 percent said it will be about the same; and 14 percent said it will be more than last year.
"Holiday spending is down, and that's not surprising in the context of today's economy and other world events," said Gloria Park Bartolone, vice president, division manager at Maritz Research. "While the numbers aren't significantly lower than last holiday season, they might reflect an element of caution on the part of consumers."
