nate has hit rock bottom

Well, it could be worse - I was recruited because I was an Opeth fanboy who accidentally clicked the UM link on their site, posted reviews of Napalm Death - Scum and Nasum - Human 2.0 for the hell of it, then got an email from Mark saying basically 'you're okay at this, wanna keep it up for freebies?'

Man . . . I've tried finding somebody in almost every other forum. So I figured I might as well try the GMD forum. I actually haven't really been to that forum in a LONG time.

Finding a writer that has the time and/or desire is proving to be quite hard.

Yeah, everybody automatically thinks 'Wow, free CDs!' - what they don't realise it that it also entails listening to album after album of weak, underproduced, derivative power metal bands obsessed with repeatedly plundering Helloween's back catalogue and then trying to find an entertainingly descriptive way to write about the experience. If that's not the journalistic equivalent of Chinese water torture, I don't know what is.

Hmm, writing reviews you for UM you say. Most of my reviews are hand written but maybe if I have the energy Ill type some up later and send you some.

There's no way I'm seeing more power metal in my promos than I am, say, MELODIC DEATH GOTHENBURGER METAL!!! Or perhaps even black/death metal. In fact, I'd say we get power metal the least. (I actually think it's an urban legend about all the Helloween clones myself when you compare it to the other genres).

About a year ago, it dawned on me that black metal BY FAR is the most reproduced genre, and just by surfing around you can tell that on a near-weekly basis there must be 3 million one-man Burzum wannabe's seeping out of the woodwork: "Home-made metal".

IMO, I would honestly say black metal has become the most reproduced genre overall. I'm not sure why it escapes being labelled derivative, however, such as power metal or melodic death metal. Is it because the ideology behind it prevents it from being progressive, and it's therefore 'ok' for Darkthrone and Burzum clones to keep churning out the same stuff over and over?

Yes. I've been getting a lot of BM lately as well. And that doesn't mean I've been pooping a lot.

I also recently started getting a lot of hardcore/noisecore/poopcore. I'll tell you what that genre is just as limited as any other with it's good bands.

Egads there are so many of those fuckers!!!

I think derivative black metal bands might escape the "heard it all before" label because they aren't all signed to labels like Century Media like the above mentioned fucktards.

Ohhh, I see there's a contact for UK peeps. Summer looms, if I'm still jobless then I might have to consider it if the option's still there...
