because of our dollar surging to $0.77 does that mean that all instruments and equipment prices must go down? its something that i've been pondering for a week.

because if the shops didn't wouldn't they effectively be overcharging?

for instance say our dollar hit US$1.00 then would all guitars have to have their prices slashed in half? because the current prices suggest that our dollar is around US$0.50

i need to know so that i can get on my high horse :(

p.s. with our dollar being so high, import's become cheaper and exports become more expensive right? but how is that so?

It's like everything, it depends on when the STORE bought it, not when you buy it. If they spent $1000 importing a guitar they're not going to sell it to you cheaper just because it cost $700 to get one now.

And b) it's not like they HAVE to go down. The store can charge whatever the hell they want.

Imports become cheaper because a guitar that cost $1000 to import 6 months ago now only costs $700. Exports become more expensive for the same reason, but backwards.

However, in reality the prices won't go down. The store will just charge the same and make more money. But you should always haggle them down anyway. If I'm buying a major piece of musical equipment I don't buy it unless they give me at least 20% off RRP. Most places will happily negotiate a good deal for cash.

Once upon a time (well in my lifetime at least), the U.S. dollar was worth only 75 cents Australian.

Then, the world's greatest treasurer floated it, and it sunk.

A year ago, the worlds (second) greatest treasurer told us that every U.S. dollar per barrel that crude went above $36 U.S., and every cent that the Oz dollar dropped (below .45) would translate into 1c/litre at the petrol pumps.

By that, I think that petrol is currently worth 66 cents per litre.

What makes you think that the exchange rate actually changes the price that you pay for stuff ?
