hey guys a need some help on my toms a jst cant get them to sound like any metal album lol they seem to be boomy am new to mixing so was wonder if us have any tips to help me a use dhf s thanx

it would help if we knew your setup....tom sizes, mics, and it would also help you if you knew if the toms are tuned correctly or how is the room treated there are a lot of reasons why your toms dont sound right. but for us to give you advice on it we would need more info.

the toms are the dw 12 14 and 16 p.h rics custom maple shell from dfh superior am the mics are the close mics in dfh superior am not sure how to fully use it yet only got it a couple of days ago cheers

why not use the chimaira samples from andy sneap?
they sound great!
then just use any eq/comp with some good preset for toms and tweak it so it just sits in the mix, for the comp try use full ratio and then the other parameters so you get the smack and then back up the ratio to about 4:1.

how would a use the samples? a would prefer not to use samples cause then a wouldnt understand how to get a good tom sound

thats the very very last resort.....you'll never learn to be a great engineer if your first instinct is to replace sounds.

I would agree, but if I'm understanding this right, he's using DFH and not actually recording a kit. Is this the case?

You know, I had the same question, regarding toms... I can track some great 'rock' toms, and they're full and round and have a solid attack, but I can't seem to mix it into metal... If you wouldn't mind I'd love some suggestions also. My usual micing setup for toms: 421s on top, e604s on bottom, phase coherent, sometimes i lightly boost the attack with a Transient Designer, if it's available...

here's a sample:

That sounded like a tuning issues to me.

I'd ditch the bottom mic, use a similar compression to your snare (kinda low thresh, fast release, long attack), look into cutting midrange and boosting 3-5khz or so.

im just curious when you are tracking drums, do you listen back to the drums soloed and getting everything sit in itself or do you bring in the drums after you get your other tracks. for me i get the drums sounding good then bring up the other tracks.

I do believe that what you're hearing IS compressed low thresh, slow attack, fast release 4:1 ish, and they're boosted at 4.5k, and between 100-300Hz depending on the tom....

...and unusually there's actually no comp on the snare itself... he just hits it stupid hard, and it sounds pretty snappy...

I usually work from the drums up, but I also don't solo too often, unless it's the entire drum kit, 'cause it's the sound IN context that I usually listen to, rather than just the solo'd mic...

...and those tuning videos are great, I'll be sure to practice my drum tuning
