Need mastering for shitty recording

I've been working on a compilation sort of thing which involves material recorded on 4 track a loooooong time ago. To make thing even better, the original 4-track tapes are long gone, and all I've got is a CD of mixes done a long time ago. As you can imagine, they sound like shit.

I've given up on getting these tracks to sound good, but I would like to at least get their volume to a reasonable level (they're pretty quiet now). It's about 70 minutes of music. Anyone interested?

You do realise that there's no point in mastering a shitty mix? If raising the volume is all you want, just throw a limiter on.

What? There's all the more point in mastering if the mixes are crap.

Is it? Ever heard about "shit in=shit out"? You can't polish a turd. A shitty mix can't be rescued by mastering.

Of course you can't make a crap mix sound totally awesome, but you can help it. You can ask any capable ME's opinion about this.
