Negative Choirs of the Eye stuff

i'm not sure if you read it, but i was comparing your music to Ulver's, mostly in praise; but i felt the post was a bit untimely considering.. and hence deleted it.

board mods can read all deleted comments!

anyway the praise is appreciated and reassuring, so thanks. nonetheless, their board over there was being quite judgemental based on just one comment or two, and i hope the review doesn't end up just being something like "SO TOTALLY PRETENTIOUS, WHAT A DICK THIS GUY IS" type of stuff.

...Greg, where are the solos you told us that we will like? I could only listen to one in Wayfarer and it's not that amazing thing.
Ecto, there are two distinct solos. one is in the antique and the other is wayfarer. other than that i did have a solo in marathon which was cut because the music that was under it didn't fit the song. in manifold there is a section where i am playing three improv solos all at once for texture for about 3-4 mins. and in pitcher of summer there are no solos but i did come up with the harmony guitar passage during the second verse of the song or i think its the second verse. but anyway that is where all my shit is on the album.

Like "Emperor play sophisticated black metal art exclusively!"?

I don't think their music is pretentious though. I don't even know what's meant by calling music pretentious. I guess you could call Emperor's attitude uh..pretentious..but..yeah. I don't know what I'm saying.
I think attitude has a lot to do with how pretentious a band is. For instance, if you name your album "( )" and have untitled songs where the lyrics consist of 4 or so repeated syllables which create a made up language known as "Hopelandic" than your band is pretentious.

yeah, what if they really are all brilliant insane guys? or are you saying that there can NEVER be a person artistic/intelligent enough to name an album ( ) and sing in a made-up language?

if you're like "LOOK IM ARTY" and then you mash your fingers on a keyboard once every ten seconds while staring into the sky, then i might call that pretentious.

I'll give you something negative to read if that fagmuss of a record dealer has ordered a copy for me. He said last week that it was temporarily out of print? What?

Here's something that i think is kind of a negative about the album, in some weird way (its about the only thing i could think of anyway). The lack of 'riffs' and repetition and so on is of course a great thing and something i really take a lot from. It's one of those ideas i'm very intrigued to see carried out because i think many people want to do such a thing but it's a very hard task.

However, it does have a disadvantage. The lack of repetition means that to me my favourite moments are just that.... moments, solitary moments in time. And i think after the initial period of listening wears off, when it's sat in my collection for a while unplayed and i need that spark to think to listen to it again.... i'm not really sure what it is that will drag me back. I'm not going to walk around humming some section or riff, or anything of the like. I guess it will just be the memory of the feeling it had for me.

But then again, that's the aim of the album. It's a minor negative effect of the approach, not of the execution. Repetition is certainly overused in a lot of stuff, but i also think it can be used to great effect if used wisely, and in that area i think there is room for a little more within Kayo Dot, heighten the effect of certain moments through repetion (along similar lines to what you already do, but a bit more so. Certainly not direct repetition without alteration). This is just a small thing that would make me enjoy the album that bit more though.

I guess what im saying is that if some of those 'moments' that i love most were repeated in some form elsewhere in the song (even if rather altered) then the emotional effect would be greatly heightened for me. And such a thing also ties a song together a bit more and gives it a slight touch more focus.

i get YaYo's point. having listened to the album repeatedly for a couple of months, though (advance copy!), i have to say that just about every song has little "moments" that i walk around and hum. i generally remember them by vaguely where they are in the song. i think the indieworkshop review even mirrored this by mentioning a minute-and-second time in "wayfarer" that has one of these "memorable moments". (i wish i could give times for some of these, but i left my KD cd in my home CD player today. bleh)

the downside, i think, is that none of these moments are the "best part of the song". the best "PART" is a more holistic thing, so i'm always remembering something less than the best part. but i think that's okay because even the little memorable bits are great.

I don't think I have many complaints with the album's music, although I understand what yayo and xfer said.

HOWEVER! I just got the actual CD and I will say that I'm a bit disappointed with the artwork and design, especially after the motw CDs.

I will say this, though. During the whole "simple cover art" conflict, I thought to myself "it'd be cool if they put simple stuff on the outside and complex art on the inside, or vice-versa" so I was pleased to see that the actual CD had simple art on it. Kinda neat! And I really dig the composition-map thing. I just wish there was more.

And color! Color! I know you guys did the uh..lack of color thing intentionally (after seeing the layouts for Bath/lybm) but the actual songs give me great mental..uh..images and color (Marathon = reds, Pitcher = grey, Manifold = brilliant oranges, Wayfarer = green/blue, Antique = Blue/black. I don't know why I typed that out.)..so I was sort of disappointed by the lack of color. I'm assuming this was all done intentionally, because the art for the motw CDs were really..uh..colorful. You don't have to give me reasons or anything (although that would be cool), but that's the only part of the CD that's disappointed me so far.

Wow, okay. I'm done.
