Neofolk/Dark Folk/ Apocalyptic Folk

I like Sol Invictus the best, especially Lex Talionis.
Tenhi are cool, and while I don't listen to them frequently, but I enjoy Puissance from time to time.

Yea, all those martial neoclassical acts create a pretty contrived mood; hammering the same ambient beat is a no brainer, but Puissance sometimes hits the spot.

For apocalyptic neoclassical, check out Elend:

This isn't quite what you described, but for great apocalyptic folk, check out Rome:

Sol Invictus are painful to listen to. For similar stuff I much prefer Current 93, particularly Thunder Perfect Mind.

Ulver's Kveldssanger is still the best thing I've heard in this genre, unless Dead Can Dance count as neofolk. Toward the Within is very folkish, are one of my favourite albums ever of any genre.

I also fail to see how Elend is in any shape or form folk. Great band nonetheless, so it can never hurt to recommend them.

Painful is not exactly the word I'd use to describe Sol Invictus. I find them very entrancing. But I see your point. They use noise and feedback quite a bit, so they're rather harsh on the ears.
Elend are amazingly atmospheric, but just too overblown and confusing for me personally. And they don't use drums, which is a shame.
I need to check out that DCD album.

He said in one of his posts that a lot of neoclassical music is also decent, or something along those lines; so I figured I'd recommend them.

EDIT:

What about Empyrium? Not saying Kveldssanger isn't good; I love it. But Empyrium's Where At Night the Wood Grouse Plays and Weiland are just as good, I think.

It's the vocals that trouble me. The music is quite pleasant. Agalloch's cover of Kneel to the Cross should how awesome their music could sound with a vocalist who doesn't sound like Bad Boy Bubby.

I have only heard Empyrium briefly; I really need to pick up these albums.

I've listened to Death in June;it's not bad; good atmosphere, but that constant acoustic tinkling gets tiresome after a while.Reminds me of another neofolk act Ordo Rosarius Equilibrium.

Sol Invictus strike me as more mysterious and interesting.
