It is a pretty interesting track, though I'm only about half way through it. Much more black metal focused at parts than I'm used to with them, but also some very good melodies that are not that far away from what one is used to with them.

Obviously I don't expect this to translate into some kind of sound going forward for their next album as their EPs seemed to always be self contained.

I love Agalloch and have not heard one part of their song that sounds like Black Metal. I'll probably check it out at somepoint. Your sig is annoying by the way.

I thought Faustian Echos was good especially towards the end. Agalloch always climax any of their songs. Faustian Echos sounds like a continuation of the song 'Into The Painted Grey' from Marrow of the Spirit, which is a good song. Luckily the album does not actually go in the direction of the song. I still feel based on the first 3 fullengths the band could have gone in a much different direction and am somewhat disapointed with the bands more extreme stuff. I guess just have to accept Agalloch is changing and becoming more underground in terms of production and songwriting. I don't recall Marrow of The Spirit having much if any clean vocals and I grew to really like Haughm's vocal approach, but some of the album does have the Agalloch vibe they are known for.

Listening now. I'm one of the few people that think Marrow of the Spirit is Agalloch's best. I loved how much darker it sounded compared to the wintry plains of Ashes Against the Grain and The Mantle.

When I first heard of a new Agalloch EP incoming I was assuming it would be more basic atmospheres within experimental terrain, but this sounds like a logical follow up to Marrow of the Spirit. Good stuff.

How rare is it for a band to get more challenging and raw over time? This is great. On the other hand, the harsh vocals are still not particularly good. Too crackly. I think something like what Lantlos does would suit this well.

Regardless, this track is certainly enough for me to go see them again in July.

I wouldn't call them more 'challenging,' but it definitely is odd seeing them progress this way considering I figured they'd follow the progression from The Mantle into Ashes Against The Grain and build on that.
