New album Foregone out February 2023

My biggest issues with the album are the chugging and the autotune. Aside from on Cynosure, I hate the autotuning on this album. And I know that Pure Light of Mind has to have some effects on the vocals, but it actually does sound good to me, particularly on repeat listens.

Well, apparently this autotuning is "the right way" to do cleans. As for Pure Light of Mind - I'm not saying it sounds bad, just that the verse vocals in particular genuinely don't sound like Anders. If his voice has been processed to that kind of level then it just becomes too fake for me. It's not much different to listening to AI-generated music.

The way Anders approaches cleans now reminds me of how I approached growls when I first started doing them. Basically I was trying to remove any trace of my own voice. It was later that I realised it's actually good to let some of your natural tone come through as well, as this is what gives the vocals personality and emotive properties. Anders has gone the opposite route of starting off this way with his cleans and regressing to the point where they are just computer-generated emptiness.

Alright, that makes a lot more sense. I completely agree with you on that.

I couldn't let the familiarity of Pure light of mind evade me, so after listening to the chorus over and over again I finally remembered: except I forgot the band's name. What's the name of that band with a lot of members, kinda folky, they have a female and a male singer as well. I thought it was Of Mice and Men, but that's something entirely different. But this band has a similar name.

They sing about animals and shit.

edit: of monsters and men. now to find the song..

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Eluveitie, but I don't think that's it. I'm gonna assume it's not, anyways, since I haven't really listened to them whatsoever. I'll try to find who they might be though.

I remember Clayman and him being weird as fuck haha.

It might not be of monsters and men though, even though I was searching for them. But know for certain that there is a famous, folky song, where a woman with a nordic accent has a very similar tone as to Anders' "I walked a mile and I'd I do it again", except she brings down the tone at the end. The lyric is sth like "... for the very fist time".

Also a bit disappointing for the "Anders has such a unique voice" crew to act like this shit is good. This is what you were praising Anders for not being.
Apart from the verses of Pure Light of Mind, which I like for their novelty, his voice is the most significant flaw on the album for me, precisely for this reason.

Not going to go into too much detail at this point, but my initial ratings...

The Beginning of All Things - Bjorn can write this stuff in his sleep. Sounds fine, but what's up with the title? Might as well just be called "Start of Album". Lol. Come on.

State of Slow Decay - It's okay, and I don't think the chorus is so bad, but I can't give a song which rips off BBF this hard anything higher than a 6. So - 6/10.

Meet Your Maker - Improves with the vocal volume turned down. Nonetheless, a quite basic track with annoying Benson chorus. 6/10.

Bleeding Out - Generic as fuck. Boring. 3/10.

Foregone Part 1 - Sounds better now, but still nothing special. 6/10.

Foregone Part 2 - Anders says this one is like Gyroscope. Sums the current state of the band up in many ways. 5/10.

Pure Light of Mind - Could work really well for another band. I don't want this from IF though. As noted in my other posts, vocals sound so, so fake. 5/10.

The Great Deceiver - Probably my favourite song from the album. Cool melodies, and with vocal volume turned down and Joey line removed this one is decent enough. ITM level. 7/10.

In the Dark - Battles song with better production. When I listen to this I just feel like saying, if you don't want to be In Flames anymore then don't be In Flames. Do a side project for stuff like this and Pure Light of Mind, Create a full, cohesive album with this kind of music on it. I'd have no interest, but maybe others would. Shoehorning this kind of song on an album that also includes songs like SoSD and Foregone Part 1 is just dumb to me. Anders talks about Siren Charms being schitzo - how is Foregone any different? Oh... 3/10.

A Dialogue in B-flat Minor - Stupid title, why call it this when there's a song with an extremely similar title on the Clayman rerelease? Anyway it's just a boring metalcore song. 5/10.

Cynosure - I actually kind of like the opening 30-40 seconds of this one. That's about it though. 5.5/10.

End the Transmission - Yes, please do. Boring. 3/10.

Become One - Do one. 0/10.

Probably tied with SC for lowest initial scoring of an album. With Battles there were at least a handful of songs I sort of enjoyed before later realising they all sucked. ITM had a few songs I really liked, alongside some garbage. This album is just... well, it's not In Flames to me. I've felt that way since I heard the first couple of singles drop, and it hasn't really changed.

Overall 5/10, for now. I'll listen to some of these songs again tomorrow and see if I'm feeling more (or less) generous.

Wtf are these vocals on « Pure Light of Mind » ?
(But the song itself makes me think of Ghost, a band that i do enjoy)

& what exactly is supposed to be enjoyed on « End of Transmission» ?

Very disappointed by the still unheard songs since all the singles previously released sounded great to me.

Now that's a great name for the next IF album with Benson.

The more I think about it, Foregone is like what would happen if you fed every IF album post-2000 into a music making AI algorithm, and then maybe tossed an ATG, Tool and Howard Benson best-of CD in there for a laugh as well. You get an album that sort of sounds like In Flames, but something is seriously off. The uncanny valley of music.

The alt rock stuff they’re doing is so boring. I’m just asking for fast paced riffs as existing in STYE and CC. Keep the catchy choruses but don’t be so soft in the verses.

Where’s the intensity here, I want Dimension Zero back.

I can't imagine a world where Foregone is a worse album than Battles or I the Mask, but this is also a world where SC is a Top 5 IF album for at least one person on this planet. :D

In terms of rankings it'd be something like

-all the good albums-

ASOP
Foregone
Siren Charms
Battles

Battles will likely always be the worst. Foregone has some decent metal songs on it so jumps above SC, which has no good metal songs on it.

ASOP just about gets ahead of Foregone, mainly on the strength of the EP and the last remnants of Jesper's influence.
