I'm thinking of getting myself a new guitar. One that I will use for live playing mostly, but also for some recording I suspect. I've allways wanted a Gibson Explorer and I'm torn between two choices.
First of all I'm going to redo the finish on the guitar like Dimebag does in their "vulgar videos from hell" dvd, so the looks other than the body shape is unimportant.

Option 1: Buy a Gison Explorer, change the mics to two emg 85 pups and redo the finish.

Option 2: Buy an Epiphone Explorer, change the pups as above and change the tuners as well as redo the finish.

What do you guys think? A friend of mine told me that the wood and craftmanship on the epiphone explorers are as good as the Gibson explorers except for the tuners and the electronics.

I think your friend makes sense to me, as I've played Epis that handle and sound as good as a Gibson at a lower price. And since you're redoing it anyway, that'd be my option.

Please, please, PLEASE do not touch the finish on a Gibson....

PLEASE

Buy an Epi and have at it.....

I think you're right. I own a 2002 limited edition epiphone lespaul and it plays like a dream. I actually think it plays as well as, if not better than many standard gibson models.

wolfeman: I'm gonna totally rape the finish on the guitar:heh:
so I guess it would be blasphemy to use the powerdrill on a gibson!
