New In Flames

I feel Anders stuck somewhere thinking his beeing a better singer then he is. Feels a bit pretentious and the vocal lines are not really that good. It doesn't sounds like the in flames that I liked in the past.

New song it´s not bad but I understand that this is not what in flames fans want to hear.

This would fit a project like passenger.

Well melodic death metal it´s a genre beaten to death, not suprised that they wanted something different.

Anyway I never was a big fan of in flames, even in their top albuns but I can recognize that The Jester Race it´s a groundbreaking album for the time and did influence a lot of the scene. But the only bands that really, really keep my interest in this style it´s Scar Symmetry and Belakor and they have nothing to do with In flames style.

sounds to me like his own voice was way too loud in the cans.
he's singing like he's intimidated by his own voice, sounds very insecure in a bad way

Not necessarily a bad thing in my book cause I've grown tired of perfect pitch and perfect tone. I realized that music that stands the test of time sounds imperfect more often than not. The problem lies more in the fact that It just doesn't fit the music and the production in this case and the song sounds uninspired.

Suburban Me just came on at random in iTunes. I'll stick to that In Flames any day (even though the Bass sound weird as hell on that track).

Yeah I don't mind if the vocals aren't perfect, but his just sounds..... weak. Vocals were way too loud in the mix too. I never thought the strength of this band was his voice either, and it's like they're focusing on that now. It gets a big ol' meh.

Seems that everybody is hating this album!lol It´s somehow understandable because it sounds nothing like in flames, most of the songs are quite slow.
Anyway, after so much crticism around this last one, I took a listen and I cant say that didnt like it. I was expecting a really shitty album but I don't think it is so bad as people say.

Now it´s quite clear that they want to move away from the sound that brought them fame. I saw something funny somewhere saying that this album it´s the st.anger of melodic death metal! ahah

In Flames hasn't sounded like old In Flames in ages, and there's nothing wrong with doing different stuff, so that's not the the issue. These songs are just unimaginative, heartless, weak and feel really forced.

But usually when most fans criticize the new albuns its because they dont have that sound like in the old days. Just see the shitfest of comments on youtube, it´s always the new vs old and they know that the band isnt playing the same thing in ages but they like to point the same old shit over and over.

And most of hardcore fans still have some hope to see them back to the roots. Anyway, as for the second part I cant agree, because I already liked Sounds of a Playground Fading, so this comes as some continuation of that kind of sound. I cant deny that some structures and transitions feel akward but when you are moving to area outside the confort zone it´s much harder to compose in a homogeneous way.

I like the songs, I am not in love with them but I like the experimental side of this, doesnt sound unimaginative, heartless, weak e.t.c to me, just sound that they are trying something different but lacks some confidence and coherence to the whole.

I listened to the whole album once through last week feeling I should at least try. It's not bad, but I fucking hate it. I just ended up listening to a bunch of old in flames albums afterwards haha. I think it is a pretty natural progression after Sound of a Playground Fading but I was disappointed with that album too, it had like one song I liked.

Whatever, bands changed and all but I feel like they are alienating a larger fan base than what they will gain with the new softer material. Seems like a bad business move but they probably do not give a fuck (and they shouldn't, they should just do whatever they want).

That's been my main complaint about them, Anders' singing cannot carry a whole song no matter how much they wish it would. Probably the main reason why I stopped listening to them after A Sense of Purpose, I liked that album, wasn't great by any stretch, but I liked it better than most releases in 2008. Anything after that has been more of the same and it's not good.

So I'll play the devils advocate.

I'm a huge fan of In Flames' early albums (up to and including Clayman). They were just amazing.
I really hated every album they put out after Clayman, it just sounded like terrible, unimaginative, indistinguishable Metalcore. And yet I saw a lot of people that actually liked that crap.
I've been listening to the new album for a couple of days, and although it's not even close to the awesomeness of The Jester Race, this album, and the previous one, present much better tunes than everything they did last decade. At least those last two albums have distinguishable choruses and hooks, interesting sounds (see "The Attic" for example) and a lot of emotion, even if cheesy. It will never touch me like their old stuff, but I can definitely enjoy listening to this.
More than all it's funny for me seeing all those guys who liked 00's-era In Flames suddenly jump on the "In Flames aren't what they used to be" bandwagon. Yes they still aren't good like they were in the 90's, but they became a bit better then they were in the 00's. I also enjoy the production of "Siren Charms" a lot more than the cardboard sound they had last decade.
I always used to think that Jesper was the good creative force in the band, but it seems like his departure actually benefited them.

saw them live in Madrid a few days ago. Still amazing live, even though they play too much of those last albums songs with an emphasize on lyrics so fans can sing along the chorus.

A thing I noted, they had the absolute best drum sound I've ever heard live. I talked to the drum tech (the person I was with is his long time friend), who is also Blind Guardian's, and ex-Rammstein's as well. I asked him what sample he used (cause I really believed it could only be triggered) and told me it's all natural. Only reverb added, and a good audio engineer does the rest. I was just amazed. He also told us anders is kind if a diva (and I found him quite annoying on stage by the way) but all the other guys are super nice. I enjoyed the smile on the "new" guitarist's face. You can tell he is having an absolute blast playing with In Flames !

FWIW : so many people in the audience knew basically all the lyrics from all the cheesy choruses they have released during the past years. It did not look like it was a bad move like long time fans say it is. It seems to be working for them. Even my sister listened to their last single in loops for days when it was released. If that's what they like to write now, and if people buy their music, how can we blame them ?

Last I heard their drummer is running kicks from a backing track (seen a few vids of this) curious if that's still going :/

A band should only write what they want to write that's for sure. But it seems like these days they don't even want to remember who they were pre 2002, which is what upsets me :( but hell, I enjoy some of the newer stuff too. This new album just won't grow on me though and I loved SOAPF
