New Mikael interview

"I think we're going to particularly change up the songs from the earlier couple of albums - I wanna do "Under the Weeping Moon" from the Orchid album, I love that song and "Nectar" from Morningrise and "April Ethereal" from My Arms, Your Hearse and "Serenity Painted Death". Those kind of more obscure songs... they're awesome, I love to play those kinds of songs.
"

=D

Makes me a little sad that they were going to be conceptual albums and he just didn't have the time, though. Great interview though.

That really was an awesome interview man. I kinda got a bit scared when Mike started going on about leaving Opeth for a while after the tours, because I think being 'sick' of the band can't technically be a good thing. Overall though it sounded like they were just having a normal conversation, not an interview! haha, it was awesome, thanks for that.

That was great. Some great possible quotes there, but I wanted to point out.

Unchallenged Hate: Yeah, you guys have made, what, 4 albums in just over 3 years now? That's quite a bit for a metal band at this point.

M. Åkerfeldt: Yeah, heh, and it just feels like I'm tired of the band right now, so after we do this tour I'm just gonna relax for a couple of months. After that I'm probably going to do something like a side project with Steven.

I would tell them just to buy all the Porcupine Tree albums, because that's the last band to make kind of a big impact on me. When I first heard them, I was just enthralled. I remember calling up the other guys who were in Opeth at the time - the first drummer [Anders Nordin] and bass player [Johan De Farfalla] and telling them that I'd found a band that's better than Camel! And they just rushed over to my place to listen to this new band, Porcupine Tree!

 That is so cool! It reminds me of when I first heard Opeth.

Unchallenged Hate: I've also read that there's been a lot of mutual influence between you guys. Steve said there are going to be some Opeth-isms on the new Porcupine Tree record.

M. Åkerfeldt: Yeah, you know I think it kinda goes both ways. I never expected what I did to be an influence on my musical mentor, but obviously it's a huge compliment to us that he likes Opeth to the point that he's been inspired by the music. And to be honest, I can hear some Opeth and Meshuggah influence on the In Absentia album. I don't know about his future, but I did hear one of the new demo tracks and it, too, was pretty heavy. I guess that's how the music is linked together for Porcupine Tree and Opeth - even though we're a heavier band, I think it's really a similar style in that the same people are likely to enjoy both bands.

How awesome that they are an influence on each other.

Yeah... but he is only human...

Pissed me off a bit though...

Only thing that justifys it is that Opeth do make resonably good music...

Great interview. I've always like reading interviews with Mikeal where he talks about metal band (these interviews are few and far between!). The fact that he loves Soulside Journey is amazing. That's one of the best DM albums ever!

"We kinda saved all the stronger melodies for Damnation, so I think the fact of the matter is that he did more of a production job on Damnation, though he did a great job on Deliverance as well. "

this both upsets and makes me happy! :D

You can tell, a lot of the riffs on Deliverance are dissonant or just percussive. Which suits it well, and it's got some amazing melodies throughout, but Mike's generally a very melodic writer and all of that had to go somewhere.

hmm, he pointed out that he's sick of writing melodies like the ones on Morningrise... so I suppose Opeth are going to 'progressively' become more standard in structure, and we'll never get a glimpse at the old days again.

They already have become more standard in structure and I think he was referring to the twin guitar melodies not song structures...

He's been saying that same thing since MAYH, so that time is already here.
