Hi guys,

I've been working on a new mix of one of my band Red Seas Fire's songs. My ears are getting tired and I think I've got to the point where I need some fresh opinions and input.

My thoughts at the moment is that the the kick is too loud, and the bass guitar is a bit flubby. Bear in mind the guitar and bass takes are not final, just quickly tracked to get the song down. The outro is supposed to be a fade out, but I haven't done that yet. Also, the mastering was a very quick and messy job so do excuse that!
Any comments would be very welcome.

Sounds pretty powerful to me dude! Has Moles club had chance to hear it yet? :D

Thanks man! Unfortunately not, we still need a singer. We have a new myspace going live really soon, once that's up we'll start promoting properly and hopefully find ourselves a vocalist.

The kick is at a good level, don't do anything to it.

However, the snare sounds like it has too much body?
A little too much in the 200-350Hz region?

It needs more crack, definitely!

Really digging this overall, very organic! AxeFX is sounding lush, Adam! Snare has way too much body though, kind of a wonk to it. Shelve the top end at like 8khz+ and remove some 200-300 (or don't boost as much there) and you should be good!

Cheers for the advice guys, I've definitely been struggling with the snare so I'll try the tips tomorrow!
Glad you dig the guitar tones Jeff :)

Alright, I've cut some 250k out on the snare, also brought the bottom mic up a bit. The link in the OP should be the latest version, but here it is again:

It's definitely better but I'm still not getting the "pop" that I love on a good snare sound. Any ideas for that? I'm wondering if I should try blending in some samples.

Nice song!

this shit is bangin'!

Cheers dudes!

That'd be great mate thanks! I'm free all day Tuesday, give me a text and we'll sort something out :)

Since it sounds like you're already using the Nir-Z snare, the pop is all in the processing... compression, in particular. What's your attack setting? Your release should be pretty quick, as well, and with a hard knee if that's an available setting. You'll also get some smack from boosting the top end like I mentioned, as well as finding a frequency between 4-6khz to boost to bring out the stick attack.

I'd lower the bottom mic a bit, tho... sounding kinda ratty on the lower velocities/quieter bits.

A good technique is sending the snare to a bus, and on the bus having a compressor that has treshhold -30 or something (depends on the in-sound ofcourse), and alot of ratio. Attack 30-40, quick release, hard knee. Then "blend" it in with the original snare track. The snare-bus channel shouldn't sound like much more than a short attack. I use this alot, try it out.

Good ear, that is indeed the Nir-Z. I'll definitely out your compression settings, I've been using the Stillwell Mr Tom compressor on the snare, which doesn't have attack or release controls, but I'll change it for one that does.
When I boost top end I seem to just get massive rattliness, even with the bottom mic all the way off. I'll keep messing around with it though.
Cheers for the help dude.

Cheers Carl, I've got something similar to that going on at the moment, but I'll try and refine it with your settings :)

God that guitar tone is sick. The metallic tightness on those low notes is fucking monstrous. So much character and so clean. Fucking phenomenal.

I don't really like the kick sound but that all come down to preference. The guitar tone is just so incredible and the electro stuff is perfect. Awesome song and mix.

Cheers,
George.

That is one of the most organic Axe-fx tones I've heard. Sounds awesome Adam!

Thanks so much guys, I wasn't too sure about the guitar tone at first but I'm really digging it now!
I'm not a fan of the kick either George, sounds like a bouncing basketball, but it's the best I've managed so far. I'll mess with some different samples later.

cool song and nice guitartone.
not really digging the drums though, sorry...especially the overheads/cymbals sound thin and fake :(
Some more bass guitar (mid-growl) would be cool ;)

Thanks for listening Lasse, I'll have a go getting more body into the overheads and generally improving the kick and snare.
I did try giving the bass a more prominent growl but then it started stepping all over the guitars, but I'll try again more carefully.
Cheers for the feedback :)
