Hi all. I am starting one of the dreaded "hows my mix" threads. I have been wanting to post for a while now but kept getting side tracked. Anyway, I have three projects that I am looking for input on. These were all done in the last month or so. Any input would be appriciated.

http://undisidid.net/amp/temp/sotf.mp3 (Silence of The Fall)

http://undisidid.net/amp/temp/chainwax.mp3 (Chainwax)

http://undisidid.net/amp/temp/wings.mp3 (Wings of Severence)

These are in order of oldest to most recent. Thanks again guys.

Dude! One at a time! You're killing us here!
They all sound great and you know it.

The first one, "Silence Of The Fall" is my favorite.
The last one, "Wings of Severence", I'm curious to what amps were used. The guitars are a little to grainy/fizzy for me and the drums seem like they need to breathe some. That's just my opinion. Sounds great anyway.

I really like the bass guitar in "Silence". SVT? What mike? What bass? Pickups? Info please!

Thanks for the input. The Silence of the fall band we used my Wife's Integra bass (faith No More used them I believe) and her Ampeg SVT II (i think its II, 2 space, eq, tube, not sitting in front of me @ the moment) with a shitload O' gain, just goin direct. Then I put it through the Voxengo voxformer for compression @ mixdown. Its a great bass setup. She stopped doin the band thing a few years back and wanted to sell her gear. I told her no way cause it was top notch stuff that I could use for the studio. She wants to start playing Drums, so now we can get a nice studio set too. Maybe I'll tell her i'll play guitar with her. hmm. I sold my amp... what a shame... Guess I'll have to go get a mesa or 5150:) Sorry to post so many songs at once guys. Thanks again

I only listened to Silence, it was a really nice mix, but it seemed like some hi-freqs were irritating my ears a little bit.

yeah... I'm not sure if my hearing is going or if my monitors/car/van just wont go that high of freqs. Had the Chainwax guys say the same thing. I hope i was able to compensate for it. I have been just cutting any freqs that I cant hear so that what I hear is hopefully what everyone else hears.

I´ve only heard the first one. Sounds powerful to me but In my opinion you have to work a little bit with drums and lows freq too. I like the sound of the bass really clear but I think the total mix needs more low without destabilize the final mix. The Kick have a little bit strange peak in high mids if I was mixing this I´d probably round kick sound. I don´t know if it´s your natural recording kick sound but probably you have to turn down some of this mid-high freqs and round it with a sample maybe only using the mids or highs of it. About Snare, probably you´re looking for a crude "in your face" sound as Andy Wallace and some others but you should tune your snare higher for this kind of sound. With this recorded snare. First of all I´d correct some blows then I´d reserve a track with this crude sound and then gate another snare track and compress and reverb it with a small reverb but probably with lots of reverb and then create a bus with a classic room or plate reverb (your taste) and send both to it.

Hope this helps.

Best regards

About Snare: Are you mixing in analog or daw what comp are you using? Try to rock this crude sound to the compressor and round it. Try to mix it with a good snare sample. Can you show us how your snare sounds in solo ?

What are you using for mastering, Levels...need info about

best regards

I am mixing ITB nowadays. I have been using the DB-Audioware Compressor lately for snare. I also use the Timeworks Mastering Comp for, You guessed it, Mastering :) I have been trying Diffrent Attack/Release settings lately, so I am up for any suggestions. Thanks.

Sorry flhctroll, so much work. I don´t use this software stuff for mastering to say truth usually send my jobs to a Mastering Engineer sometimes because of the label sometimes because I need someone with fresh ears. Try to round the final mix a little bit in low freqs (100-120) and probably you have to turn down something in your kick. When you listen the unmastered mix are you hitting it so much with the snare? sometimes it´s the answer when a snare sounds so crude no matter which comp and reverb are you using for.

good luck

best regards

I've never used the DB Audio Compressor so I don't know but when I use the Timeworks Mastering Comp, I usually run it on Hard with a release of about 50and it seems to sound pretty good to me.
