Lazy prick that I am, I'll copy and paste my mini-review from the Overkill board.
Just jogged out to Amoeba last night to pick it up...I gotta say, when you're having trouble with personal angst bullshit, nothing's better than some good solid thrash metal.
So I've given it three or four listens...a lot of the songs suffer from ATS, or Aging Thrasher Syndrome. That's when a lot of tunes kinda, y'know, sound the same. I'm not saying they're totally indistinguishable, but there are only a couple songs that really leapt out and grabbed me.
The first of these would be "Unholy," probably the top spot...really nice groove with a cool, soaring chorus and some of the best rhythm work. "No Lights" has the same feel as the heavier parts of "Soulitude," and I like the midsection guitarwork on "I Rise." "Devil By the Tail" could have been faster, but the melody line of the chorus ("Devil...by the tail!") and the ending bridge are really badass.
The musicianship is impeccable and professional, which is bullshit criticspeak for "The band plays well." Which they do...stylistically, Dave and Derek bring a bit more thrash and a bit less groove than the last couple albums. This album is one of those ones that's not a particular standout in any way, but is best taken as a complete disk. Overall, a bit more of the old sound and a very solid, polished album. ***3/4 out of *****, just bordering on the "classic" level.
