I think what billy meant is the lyrical theme is about the times, and that the music reflects the period. I don't see the problem at all. They aren't saying this is a new musical trend at all. If anything he's saying they are falling into current trends. It's simple a album that represents the spirit of the time as they see it.

Nothing pretentious at all.
