New respect for Phil Collen!

I haven't met either, but by many accounts, VC is a douchebag of huge proportions - but I loved him as a guitarist when he was with Dio.
As far as PC, I always thoughht he was an OK song writer with no chops. I'll admit I'm biased - I thought Leppard peaked as a rock band with High-N-Dry with the original lineup, and consider Pyromania to be by a different band with a different - and really good - style. Just not good old rock. I recently saw youtube video of him trying out his new jackson signature guitar - that boy CAN play.
I took it as a tongue-in-cheek way of telling Viv to shut the f**k up and keep taking the big paychecks. If not, I'd be MORE than happy to take his place! lol

RJD brought Vivian out of obscurity in Ireland, iirc. In fact, when I first read who was in Dio's new band, post-Sabbath, I was like,m "Wow, pretty good guitar player for a chick...." (circa 1982-3)

I also agree that DL peaked @ High & Dry. Every release after was a step in the poppy more hair metal direction. No turning back to On Through The Night now....

I took it as a tongue in cheek retort back to Vivian as well. Also, I may have to Photoshop you into the "new" Def Leppard lineup....... :heh: :Smokedev:

Yes. The only time I remember Dio saying something bad about someone, where in an interview I remember him saying "I hope he fucking dies." Seems like the guy has some issues.

Hmmmm...... Ronnie actually didn't speak badly about people, but let's not pretend he was humble in his opinions. He was a super nice guy and loved his fans to an incredible degree, but Ronnie's all-time favorite vocalist that ever lived was Ronnie and that countless vocalists simply tried to copy him, which is true, but still.............
Ronnie was a nice guy, but he was cocky. He also had a reason to be. Viv probably was/is cocky as well, but had a reason to be while with Dio. He was a freaking MONSTER player. Viv probably did feel a bit "left out" considering his skills, with the role he was given in DL, but HE chose to join the band. He wasn't fired by Ronnie.
It wasn't a "money" issue either (not that it wasn't a huge bonus.) Viv talked about being a fan of DL even early in his Dio career, but one has to be careful what he/she wishes for. Be a wealthy musican playing rythm for a huge band or be a guitar God for a metal legend and make a fraction of the pay. Ehhh..... tough decision. It is both a win/win or lose/lose situation depending on how you look at it.

Phil and Steve Clark were known as "The Terror Twins" and shared solo duties. Does Phil now play all of his own and Steve's solos? If not, Vivian should have plenty of good stuff to play. Also, iirc I saw a Classic Albums thing on Pyromania where they talked about how they layerd much of the guitar harmonies where one played a part while the other played another completly different part and together it gave Lep their signature guitar sound. They had a mixing board and isolated the guitars. Then they literally took one guitar out out of the mix and you really couldnt tell what was being played but when they put them together the sound was unmistakeable.

I also believe High N Dry was by far their best album, but I don't think Pyromania was all that far removed from it. It was definately a step in the commercial/pop direction but nowhere near as bad as Hysteria. And for those who stopped listening after Pyromania, Retroactive and Euphoria were both good albums.

Retroactive is only good because a good chunk of the songs are from the early days.

As far as people knocking..... or at least ignoring the "poppier" Def Leppard...... I have no problem with "Pyromania." Those guys put incredible energy into that release and I think it kicks ass. I am not pointing fingers at anyone, but I think there are people NOT praising it because it was popular. I will go on record saying I think it kicks ass !! It is not in my top releases of all time, but it is a hell of a release. Those guys weren't great musicians, but they weren't substandard. They wrote some great memorable riffs and while they weren't playing the most technical solos and stuff, the riffs and solos were strung out throughout the release hidden deeper in the mix. It wasn't to the degree (nor technical prowess) The Scorpions and Accept layered the guitars in, but there was lead guitar EVERYWHERE on the disc. Collen is not the guitarist Viv was in Dio, but as I stated..... he is/was not substandard. I would even put Collen on the same level as Viv as far as writing rhythms. In many ways, it is comparing apples and oranges, but I like some of Phil's chord progressions.

I'm really not trying to be a smartass by asking this, but I am wondering something. Some of you think Phil Collen is a great guitarist, why? I'm not saying he isn't, but I've never heard him play with anyone other than Leppard. We all know that Leppard isn't exactly "guitar centered" music, so how have some of you come to this conclusion?

Good point, Vivian seems like one of those people that's never happy. If you can remember the "Behind The Music" episode Vivian said something along the lines of; [with English accent] "... I like being in Def Leppard because unlike my previous band you don't have to be some sort of Olympic athlete on the guitar... bla bla bla, whine whine whine..."

he is Irish i believe, so he would have an accent.

he is good guitar player and beyond the DIO albums i think RIVERDOGS and SHADOW KING are both overlooked classics from his catalog.

GIRL's "Hollywood Tease" taken from their 1980 debut album Sheer Greed. Vocalist is Phil Lewis who latered was in LA Guns. Notice the shred down on his knees. He can play, hence him being brought into Def Leppard from Girl.

Hey Brian. I found some more recent performances outside of Def Leppard. One's a vid of Phil and his band Manraze (Simon Laffy from his earlier band Girl on bass and Paul Cook (helluva drummer) from the Sex Pistols). They're playing J. Hendrix's 'Fire'. The other is from an appearance at Guitar Center in L.A. Phil's solos on these songs are f*ckin' killa. I like Phil and Viv as guitarists but I do think that Collen is the better guitar player especially today. I don't think he should be judged by Def Leppard recordings. Live he does wipe the stage with EVERYONE in his path. i also think that he does what he does so easily until people just take it for granted, expect it, and look for even more. I'm surprised more DL members didn't come forward and get on Viv's case about his comments. He joined an iconic band and now he's complaining about the sound that made them that way? Shoulda did that before he cashed his first check 20 years ago....Just sayin'...

Guitar Center (I think this one shows his 'chops' and it's not even a rock piece)
