Thanks a lot Jind! Seems I've got alot of ground to cover, so I'll tkae yor advice and check out one of their live dvds first. I have several buddies that are really into Rush, so it shouldn't be too har to get hold of something good from one of them.

This entire Rush wave this week has inspired me to pick up

$10 on my Kindle, not bad :)

FYI my personal fave is 2112 with Hemispheres coming in a close 2nd :) From there its probably on to Vapor Trails, something about that album just has this raw power that had not been achieved since 2112 in my opinion.

Also, as far as live albums go for me Exit Stage Left is my absolute fave!

Exit: Stage Left is my Desert Island album. I love all the 70s stuff through Moving Pictures. The 80's stuff is good too, but definitely different from what they were doing in the 70s. The 90's stuff is a melding of the two styles (although, I consider Roll the Bones to be more of the 80s-style).

The live stuff is a great way to get a sampling of catalog without going for a Greatest Hits. You have consistent sound throughout, and I've often found that songs that I wasn't too crazy about on the studio album really shine live. I can barely listen to the studio version of Xanadu, because I'm way too spoiled by the version on Exit: Stage Left.

One thing that really stood out to me on the Documentary was how good Alex's guitar sound was on their really early stuff. Lots of body, with a nicely defined crunch.

Broon's Bane/The Trees/Xanadu as the best segue songs ever?

I'd vote for that. Can't fathom how many hours I spent as a kid playing my drums along to that section of E:SL. The wooden side table I had my stereo on was completely pock-marked from me using it for all the woodblock/tuned cowbell parts.

Yeah, my mom was PISSED. :D

Every time I have seen them live Alex's tone was just phenomenal! That HK (Switchblade I think) sounds great. Good crunchy rock tone!

Fuuny you guys should mention Alex's tone as I was just thinking that if anyone proves that it's all in the hands it's Alex Lifeson.

I've seen Alex and Rush probably 10 times now, from the late 80's onward and listened to every album and frequently think about what he has gone through for guitars that he plays live and on album - his Gibson ES-335, his Superstrat days, his PRS period, and now back to mostly Gibson Les Pauls - in that time he has used Hiwatt, Marshall Super Lead, then the Gallien-Krueger and Dean Markley period, then Carvin, and lately a variety of Hughes & Kettner amps and yet every time I see him regardless of what he is playing all the songs come of sounding like they did on the albums - it does not matter the gear he uses, he sounds like Alex Lifeson.

i first saw them in Lakeland, Florida on the ESL tour... yes, they toured for it, lol (though i think it was officially considered a pre-Signals tour)... but, they were selling Moving Pictures tour programs. i exhausted a month's allowance and lawn-mowing money buying an ESL shirt and a MP tour program... i was quite a young lad, and that show really made an impression, though i was already a massive Rush fan at that point. they even played a few songs from Signals, and they hadn't even recorded the album yet.

standout things, other than the incredible playing, awesome set-list, and killer vibe, were the huge projection screen behind them playing a synchronized video accompaniment to each song, and Geddy's constant use of the "pac-man" hand gesture... hey, it was 1982

some info on that show can be found HERE.

Hmmm - 1982, I was 15 I think and had not yet seen Rush, the first time I saw them was on the Grace Under Pressure Tour at the New Haven Coliseum which is now a parking lot (shame really - it's the place I saw most of my first arena concerts). I think it was in September and me and my friend Stan went (my older brother went too but he was not the happiest camper because he had to take his much younger brother along as my mom would not let me drive to New Haven as I had just gotten my license and it was about 60 miles from home) - needless to say I was blown away. I was so psyched when the Rush Replay X3 DVD set was released and had the Grace Under Pressure concert included in the three (I had owned it on VHS and had worn it out). That's another great DVD set to add to your collection as you get Exit Stage Left, Grace Under Pressure, and the A Show of Hands concerts all in one pack.
