They got the "kiddie metal" tag because a lot of kids like them. You know, like how at one time a lot of kids liked Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth, ect 
. The masks probably don't help with that label either but IMO all that does is set them apart image wise (yes I know others have worn masks but not many) I've been a fan since Iowa. I don't think the new one is as good as Iowa but it's still damn good and grows on me a little with each listen.
