New Spawn of Possession stuff...

if you're listening to SOP for their melodies, i think you're kinda missing the point

Agreed, though I do think SoP do a good job incorporating "some" melody in with their deviant technical mastery... There are definitely some songs that i could hum to off of Cabinet, and the same could definitely go for these songs.

I like how both bands have all these technical riffs, but with all the technicality they have these catchy as hell riffs that actually keep a song together, and I don't get that from these two new albums.

It's true you have to look much harder for catchy parts in Symbols of Failure... I would'nt even say it's individual riffs, as certain sections that stick in my mind.

Let's not completely throw Noctambulant in this category until we've heard the entire album, however. The band says that there are some surprises within the 42 minutes that comprise the record.

ya know, i have to say that i more respect bands that don't rely on hooks to make an impact in the tech/math/noise/whatever genre... it's not their job to write hooks, and more often than not these melodic bits are not only of lesser quality than the br00tal parts but are indeed inferior to other bands that specialize in a more melodic sound. not that the latter specifically applies to SOP, as their melodic bits are quite good, but they still are inferior in quality to the tech/brutal parts.

also

fucking Crowpath doesn't have a single "melody" anywhere in their catalogue and that's exactly why i want to listen to them.

Tech/math/whatever bands with no melody are usually fucking terrible. And I listen to noise so I'm pretty sure I'm not a melody whore...
