Apparently on the first Death albums he didn't trigger the drums...cause he wasn't convinced of the brains and stability...so he can play without triggers..I wish they might take the try to maybe get acoustic drums on a SYL album, well atleast most of it sounds triggered to me...

Every SYL song is just a whole storm blazing on to and through you..it takes time..everytime I listen this song I'm starting to like it more and more

Hehehe, I fucking love it. :)

Seeing SYL (or Devin solo) live is like being stuck in one of those giant wind tunnels they use to test aircraft. An awesome, if slightly scary experience. ;)

I think it sounds alright. Pretty fun, could be a good drinking song. Hopefully there will be better tracks though. Hopefully some more leads in more songs too.

The entire album is "out there", btw. I'm not all that happy with the album - it's way too SYL. In the bad way. There's absolutely nothing new, exciting or anything. I think it's a good thing Dev is taking a break from record making now, hopefully he can return to old form somehow (HAARHT/City, though he's said he can never make such again).

That's really quite untrue, it has a lot of things that he's never done on SYL albums before, a bunch of the songs actually sound like his solo material. There's more ridiculousness, like the jazz flute break in "antiproduct." There are also a LOT more leads than on any previous album, especially on "Wrong Side," and some of the songs are just a lot more complex guitarwise like that one and "decimator." I don't like it all that much but to say it's "more of the same" is patently false. :P

The drums on this album aren't triggered. He said he used his Pearl SLX kit with 13", 15", and 18" toms because he wasn't happy with his drum sounds recently.

edit: They don't even sound triggered, so I'm not sure what you're talking about. By far the most natural sounding drums on a SYL album to date.

I always speak of Devin's stuff as an entirety (SYL + Solo + Projects), as it's a ying-yang thingy with SYL/Devy solo.

Just heard the album entirely...

Wow... the sounds is amazing... not so compressed as alien or synchestra.. Gene shows his worth again.. what a drummer, and rumours about Gene being a machine and not human might be true... and the 7 strings (or downtuned guitars) sound mean as fook! as do Devin''s vocals... it's crazy stuff.. pretty much a mix between city and SYL... enough synths and samples to keep me satisfied, they were lacking a bit on SYL...
Anyway, it all feels less epic as, let's say city, it sounds more like SYL, but there are things put in there that'll put a smile on a face...

The jazz part in "antiproduct" shows why Devin is considered a genious... i mean, nobody will actually do stuff like this.. everyone seems to take their music really serious, but never implements a jazz part like that...

"fucker"... my favorite song for now, almost pop like really.... the pitched voice is hilarious! and again, only something Devin could think of and get away with it as well... really cool song...

All songs are pretty cool so far, and they still need to grow on me, but i will def. buy this one, since i have all of SYL's and Devin's albums so far, this one fits right in...

Oh, and "far beyond metal" sounds different then the live version, yet very cool!

You guys definetly didn't listen to the song he's talking about considering the bands you're naming. But yes, plenty of other bands have jazz influences. Hell, Dillinger Escape Plan has a lot of that, but what Strapping does is completely different. It's just something you get and learn to appreciate or you don't.

But even if you don't like the band's niche, at least we can all agree that they're ridiculously talented musicians.

Sorry, I've been listening to SYL for 6 years ;) And yes, I have listened to that song and the album for quite a bit now :goggly: As for the bands, you were stating that no one has done jazzy metal, and I named you bands that have done it even 10 years ago.

I AM an SYL fan, and I dig Devin's shit... soooo, Im not some biased party...

Havent heard the song yet... BUT, Im gonna assume from right now, that its nothing I havent heard before.

Well damn, I believe I got served.

For the record though, I didn't claim that no one else has done jazzy metal, that was bob. And the style of jazz that Ephel Duath, Meshuggah, and BTBAM use is a lot different than this Strapping song. I can't speak for the others cause I haven't heard them.

Not to be an ass offcourse, but i clearly meant the part in "antiproduct".. i never, ever, heard it executed it like that before..

anyway, day 2 of listening, this is album is freakin amazing!
