New Stratovarius video posted!

The album isn't bad. It's not another Visions by any means, but it's a solid effort, much better than their recent stuff. The new guitarist is pretty good too!

We posted a review of the full album the first week of April. Thought I had posted a link here, but it's probably buried in another thread. Overall, the album has very much the Stratovarius sound with a whole lot more elements and interest. Matias really adds a lot of excitement and technical skill to their sound, which had faded quite a bit over the past few years. Jens seems to have been revitalized and Kotipelto's voice is used in a fuller, broader range. Especially important is that fact that most of the members contributed to the writing with Lauri doing five on his own. I think this is a great start to a more creative future.

Best Strat I have ever heard! Defiantly re-energized after the soap opera that was TK.

I like the music but there's something about the vocal melodies that just bore me to death. All of their music has the same effect on me :erk:

It's OK but not good enough for me to own

I have been a stratovarious fan since they started. This is the best thing i have listen to from them since infinity. Timo Tolki and the whole soap is over i hope and they can continue down this path.

Love it! Love it! Love it! This is the Stratovarius I've missed for forever now, even if it is missing the founder.
Last of the founding members; Tuomo Lassila left back in 1995.

But you're right, Strato hasn't sounded this good for years. Like the Chinese proverb says a crisis is also a possibility!

Who is the guitar player?

Sounds to me like this guy actually plays very well...
Matias Kupiainen, born 1983. Extremely talented and variable guitar player, plays also keys at some measure and like Timo Tolkki, he knows his ways in the studio for having worked as a producer and studio technician before he was asked to join Stratovarius.

Not that I'm complaining about this new guitarist, but I'm kinda surprised they didn't ask Sonata's former guitar player(can't remember his name, but he and Timo are working on Cain's Offering).

Who told they didn't? Maybe Jani Liimatainen wasn't available, who knows. He has his own plans with Cain's Offering and he had been preparing material for it long before the remaining guys knew they were going to continue with Stratovarius under the old moniker and needed a guitar player to match their old style and preferably able to deliver something new, too.

This is an excerpt from Rafa Basa intreview with Timo Kotipelto (released originally in Spanish) where he talks about why just Matias Kupiainen was the perfect fit:

Rafa Basa - Now you have a new guitarist, Matias Kupiainen, tell me about him, please. It is inevitable to compare him with Tolkki, but how is he as guitarist?

Timo Kotipelto - He is a very talented guy and in my opinion he is the best guitarist I have ever seen, seriously. Something really good about him is that he is a very down-to-earth guy and has our same sense of humour. Of course he can perfectly play Timo Tolkki’s stuff without any problem, but he doesn’t want to copy him, you know, and it wouldn’t have any sense because Timo is a brilliant guitarist and nobody can replace him. We needed someone who could play Timo’s stuff, his scales, melodies etc but at the same time someone who could provide his own personality and solos, of course.

Something really interesting is that we didn’t have any audition or something like that, we didn’t even see videos on the Internet. We didn’t want any famous guitarist since in that case there could always be the possibility for him to take this as a parallel project, you know, or be hired to play in an important band and that’s all. No, we wanted to be a band again at 100% and fortunately that is exactly what we have again.

One last thing I want to say about Matias is that he is a very good guy working in the studio, very rigorous and he can also play the keyboards, what makes him a versatile guy to work with. For me it is very good to have someone in the band like Matias. We know he can perfectly yield live or in the studio. We both have worked together quite a lot in the album, he was helping me with the arrangements and melodies in my songs, and I was writing lyrics for his, and we work very well together, I like it.

This is definately a newly refreshed Strato, I finally heard the whole new disc and wow, I am finally a fan again after being let down with the last couple cds. This definately is up there with visions and episode, but to be honest I like the sound and the little new directions that are here and I think with a few more listens it will be my favorite because it shows more variety than any other strato release,
