Hi guys,

First, I'm new here, even though I read this forum for quite long now, and I want to thank you all here for all the things I've learned.

I've got some issues and feel quite lost with a mix for a band I work with.
Here is the song : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6120012/SUTRAH/SUTRAH%20Ben%27s%20Song%20MASTER%200210.mp3

Tracking was unfortunately done by another guy (and there was some horrible things, especially on drums takes... not on playing who was pretty decent).
Then I've done massive editing, and a friend reamped the guitars for me through his Bogner XTC.
Guitars and bass were sloppy playing sometimes, and the guys were using old strings, in spite of my advices.

The thing is I'm not entirely satisfied with the overall sound , actually it sound kinda weak.
What do you guys think can be improved ?

Thank you,
Eric

PS : sorry for my english !

The mix is at a good starting point. The drums sound too dry so could use some ambiance - reverb on your snare and toms could help with this as well as increasing the level of room samples used. The vocals could also come up a bit!

Sounding good though!

Thank you for listening and for giving me some advices !
There's already snare verb and room mics, I'll raise a bit the send/tracks.

For the vocals, I think I can push a bit the highs on the verb too (and the vocals fader, yeah).

(I'll also try to turn off the analog button on all my SSL E-Channels, to see if it sounds less muddy then).

What about the general stereo field ?
I think it sound a bit narrow, not open enough.

I forget to precise that the clip is a quick master for listening, I'll do this better at the end.

The snare man, It's REEEEEAAALLLYYYY dry. Try verb and the comp thresh deeper, that should fuck that shit up! Otherwise I'm liking it. Guitars are sweet, they sound evil! That 13 year old vocalist needs to come up a little in volume aswell.

Are you talking about the update I just posted, or about the first version ?
Because on the new one, I've raised A LOT both room mics and verb on snare.
For me it sound almost too wet and too far, but maybe I'm used to mix too dry and need to fix that.
I think I need to tweak my snare verb a little more too.

For the vocals (he's more than 20 ahah), are you talking about screams or clean parts ? (or maybe vocals on the whole song).

After listening, I think there's maybe too much highs, especially on the overheads (and they sound too much in front of the mix).

Thank you for listening ;)

What's wrong with it ?
I compressed a little more like Backe suggest, and I've raised a bit the verb.
But I don't know if I prefer it now, or on the previous clip I posted...
I think it was more in your face on the previous one.

I like the snap/pop of that snare but for a slow song like this you should use a snare with a bit longer tail.
either that or try a gated rev on it.

I don't think it's to dry btw, and I really like the sound, just perhaps not 100% the perfect sample for slow paced music...try putting the rarefactionB snare or sn6HP on top of it for a longer decay.
I like the mix quite a bit actually, nice to hear a bit of "no TS" sludge again...really digging the guitartone (although most people here will probably hate it)...I really like the "squishiness" it has.

good job

I agree on the snare. But then again, I hate most snares.
I would actually say just a bit less of the room sample and try to find a verb with a nice tail. But that can be tricky also.
Honestly, I don;t find the snare to be all that bad..just seems a bit off.
Otherwise... kudo's on the mix. I dig the squishyness of the guitars as well.. XTC sounds good.

Hi Lasse,
Thanks a lot for the kind words !
I know it's not a common guitar tone these days, but I wanted this band to have something like their own sound.

For now, the snare is the natural one blended with your snare5.
The annoying thing is that there was so much bleed (hats, cymbals... everything !) on the original snare takes, so that I had to gate it very short.

I'll definitely try the snares you recommand, I'm sure it will sound badass !
I'll tweak again the snare verb, not still satisfied with it.

I wish I could have used your toms samples on this recording too... it will be for the next one, for sure.

Guitarguru, many thanks too :headbang:

An other LSD snare ultimate combo are sn5 blended with sn6;)
Would suite your song perfectly and isn't typical snare you can hear everywhere....

My actual fav for sure:D
Btw, I agree with Lasse about guitar sound. Lot of Bergstrand vibe on it.

Thanks ! :kickass:

I'll keep the original snare tracks, and start from scracth with sample blending and snare reverb/room mics.
I want to keep sn5 because I really like the way it sound, and I'll try to add sn6, rarefactionB or any other one who will fit the songs.

Anal : ça va mec ?
Tu es bien le Analgrinder que j'ai déjà aperçu sur g.com, non ?
Le monde est petit :p
