Hi everyone! I just recently discovered metal and I cannot get enough! I would love to go to ProgPower next year but I'm not having any luck getting any of my friends to go with me. My question is: Would a 26 year old female enjoy going by herself? I am pretty outgoing but I've never even been to a concert except for Carrie Underwood. lol

I went for the first time this year.
It is a VERY laid back atmosphere.
It is not at all a "heavy metal" concert.
It is 100% safe and family friendly.

In other words, you will have no issue if you go alone in terms of fitting in or feeling safe.

Furthermore, since you are new to metal, let me know what you think of this:

Absolutely.

I have been going to ProgPower USA since PP3 (next year is 15!) and I can tell you that I met some of my very best friends in life at the festival. This is the best group of like-minded music fans you'll find anywhere in the world; not to mention it's a huge community (when people say it's a yearly family reunion, it's the understatement of the year!).

Come to the festival and don't be afraid of making new friends, saying hi to people, striking up conversations, coming to the after-show party... I guarantee you'll have the time of your life!

I think the best way to decide if you want to go is to post on the forum and just talk to different people about the bands playing. Build a relationship up with people that way so by next year you know different forum people.

Even in Chicago I used to just go to shows with Jason when his old lady let him out of the house but after posting here and meeting lots of folks from Chicago into metal we all started meeting up at shows. I makes the experience a lot more fun. It has steamrolled into a larger thing now because of it.

If you question on if you want to go the PP next year? I would take the risk. Like any festival...it is going to be fun. If you are a fan of the music how can you not enjoy it. If you are looking to find new bands...best thing to do is look up band on Youtube you already know and like and search them out and see on the side of the screen for other bands that pop up....it is the best way to discover new bands. Also you will see tons of people talking about other bands on this very forum. While I have not attended this fest yet...I have heard all great things about it.

Thank you for the info. I am really hoping I can meet a few people before I get there to kind of soften the blow. I have checked out the pictures on Facebook and it looks like a blast. At this point I have discovered Carcass, Iced Earth, Accept, Death (just checked them out today) and Slayer. I have many more I need to check out. Any other females have an opinion?

I would suggest starting by checking every single band on the roster next year. Then what you can do is go back and check out the rosters of previous years; band by band. No better way to familiarize yourself with the festival, the bands, etc.

Also, this forum is THE only place on the internet where you'll find educated, insightful, eye-opening and always fun conversations about metal and music in general. All of the other forums are just breeding pits for assholes and trolls. Keep in mind the average age of the ProgPower USA attendee is well into their mid 30s if I'm not wrong (maybe higher by now?), so rest assured you won't see a bunch of bs around here. Lots of members of the forum are either in professional bands or involved with the industry one way or another, so a lot of times you'll get first-hand opinions directly from a valid source. I love this forum and (most) of the people on it. :)

Good point. pmrising is also that way.

But let's be fair, there's an entire 20 active people who post on that one.

Wow, so in other words, you believe in the heavy metal community, as long as its only the community you choose to associate with?

That really goes against a LOT of what has made heavy metal the long lasting form of music with really RABID fans.

Sorry, this comment REALLY struck me the wrong way and was VERY elitist.

Let me rephrase that, Jason.

Out of the forums that I have come across, this (and pmrising) are the only ones that fulfill that description. It has nothing to do with not believing in any other community aside from the one I'm a part of.

All of of the other ones I have experienced either have trolls, snobs or assholes. Try spending a few weeks in the Symphony X forum, Blabbermouth, etc... (and yes, I am calling the SX forum regulars a bunch of snobs)

Even though you are a master manipulator in twisting people's words most of the time Jason, I can see why you took what I said wrong. :)

I was sincerely not trying to twist anything....

Sorry, I have to vehemently disagree that there are NOT snobs here.

there are MANY close minded folks on this forum. It is absurd to think otherwise.

So , not twisting anything, but taking face value, it was still a bit elitist. Sorry bro.

There are some snobs here, but you can still maintain an intelligent conversation for the most part.

Try certain band forums and you'll see the difference. ;)

I am not disagreeing with you in the least.
Just saying that this forum isn't exactly immune from the BS on any other forum.

Anyhow, we will have to agree to disagree.

But back on topic, and I mean this sincerely, I would highly recommend this fest to anyone who has an interest in attending.

Hm. Looks like I'll be the first female chiming in. :)

I have been attending the festival yearly since ProgPower V in 2004. It is the highlight of my year. The first year I went I didn't really know anyone since none of my friends wanted to go. I met many people who have become very close friends over the years. It really is like a family reunion. People are very friendly -- as long as you are not pathologically shy, it will be easy to meet people.

As far as the music goes, I second the opinion of the poster who suggested going through the 2014 roster, and then go through the roster of past festivals to get a sense of the type of music that you will hear there. Remember, you will not necessarily like every band, and that is OK. It is rare that every attendee of the festival likes every band. I usually give each band a chance, though -- I have had a few pleasant surprises over the years (ie, bands I thought I would not like but ended up a fan of).

Where are you located? There may be posters on this forum who you could meet up with at your local metal shows.

I hope you decide to come. You won't regret it!
