$4 million can actually make you a pretty darn good movie. The things that make movies expensive are big name actors and special effects. Decent Indie films are made for much less than that. Seems like they've thought this out well enough. They know they want it animated and that's where most of the $4 million is going.
It was just a bad decision "In my humble opinion" because Tarja was the voice of Nightwish to me and I know alot happened with Tarja and the rest of the band. I saw them live with Tarja at PPUSA and what an amazing show that was (Thank-you Glenn) and I have seen them live with Annette and she just couldn't pull off the old songs live. I did like the latest Nightwish CD just not as much as the Tarja discography.
Annette gives Nightwish a wider potential audience. As for pulling off the old songs, I suspect that after Imaginarium is released there won't be more than one or two old songs in the setlist and those will be ones we know she can do well, like Dark Chest of Wonders and I Wish I Had an Angel.
And I thought it was a mixed bag. Tuomas' composing was great, but I have my doubts about Annette.
As for the old saw about Tarja, the band made a decision about what they felt was best for them. While I might not have liked the way they did it, if they felt that it was best for everyone if she moved on, it is hard not to support that decision.
I just wish they found a better singer than Annette. To my ears, she's just average.
Annette has a fantastic voice....it has a beautiful tone and is very easy on the ears. Her work with Alyson Avenue was top notch stuff, too. She doesn't have a powerful "metal" voice, but if Tuomas wants to do Disney style scores and music, then she is the perfect fit. I'm really excited to hear what the new opus has in store for us.....for sure, it'll be epic.

I think people are getting a little carried away with the term "movie". It sounds more like it's just a music video compilation. They're going to make a video for every song on the album, and then mash them all together with some cheesy animation segues or something like that.
They made 4 music videos for 'Dark Passion Play'. Wikipedia (without sourcing) reports that "Amaranth" alone cost ~$350,000. The record label probably figures 'Imaginarium' will be even bigger than DPP, maybe the next 'Thriller' (which had 7 of its 9 tracks released as singles), so if they think they're going to end up making videos for most of the songs, it probably wasn't hard to convince them to go ahead and pay for videos for ALL of the songs, especially if they could then package them together and sell them as a "movie" as well. And lo and behold, 13 songs x $350,000 = $4.5 million.

Amranthe cost $350,000? They got ripped off. Not that it's horrible, just that it's pretty standard as metal videos go. Band performing. Did it cost $300,000 to get a guy to shake the camera during the chorus?
As far as Annette goes, love her voice. She's not good with the older operatic stuff, but she's perfect for what Nightwish is doing now. And I agree about Alyson Avenue, great singing there too.

I was just referring specifically to the "business decision" aspect. They did the right thing to build the brand in that regard.
According to an interview with Holopainen, his original idea when he started composing new material was indeed to make 12 songs (yes 12, now they have 13) and 12 videos and join them loosely to make a DVD. It was to be packed in a special edition box of the new release and marketed through the record labels' delivery channels as usual. But when Holopainen got to know director Stobe Harju and they became friends while filming the Islander video, Harju pushed on him the idea of going for a full blown feature movie. Then they brainstormed and elaborated the manuscript together for a couple of years, until it was good enough. The project was accepted by a professional movie production company Solar Films Inc who agreed to produce the Imaginarium movie with Harju as the director.
Solar Films started marketing Imaginarium movie at Cannes Film Festival last month already which means that they are seeking channels to get in on theater sreens at least in European countries. Rest of the world may have to wait for the DVD, but while thinking the band's scheduled one-off concert in LA and it's timing in the end of January, one may get all kinds of wild ideas why just there and just then... promoting the movie, perhaps?

big name actors make a movie production that would ordinarily cost like 25 million, 60-80 million. But this post is so wrong on so many levels. There are recent movies like Watchmen that were made for hundreds of millions of dollars and they had smalltime B/C list actors. Film crews, animation crews, casting, directors, etc cost a shitton if it's to be done right. Hiring A list actors in a movie makes the film more expensive yes, but to suggest that Hollywood films would cost under 10 million without big name actors is almost an insult to the movie business and all the people that bust their asses to make a great movie!
A videogame, which is entirely programmed/animated these days costs like 20 million bucks to make. Decent actors (that aren't necessarily A or B listers), a big enough animation staff to make a good future length movie, etc should cost about 10 million bucks.
I'm sure you're right about the animation, but you can make decent independent films for very little money. A movie a friend of mine has just about finished was done for $500,000 and it's a fantasy/action film with special effects and stunts, and it looks half decent due to the skill of the people involved. And some huge blockbusters like Blair Witch were made for less than $1 million.

Now, what NFL coach would tolerate one Terrell Owens in his clubhouse, never mind two? That was Tarja and Marcelo. Tuomas never had a choice but to jettison both. And, Nightwish is far better off for it.

I do agree with this. I think they had to get rid of Tarja. My issue moreso has to do with who they replaced her with. I just personally don't find her that strong of a singer, especially when it comes to live. Will I still listen to their studio input? Absolutely as I thought DPP was very solid outside of a few clunkers; however, as I've stated before on this board, I just can't take her live. Whether it's the old stuff or even her material, she just isn't a great live performer in my book.
Indeed, and I loved every minute of that album; Though I, like others, begin to wonder if the publicity surrounding the departure/firing of Tarja had anything to do with the success and attention that album and the band attained.
I really hope this is a success because my interest is peaked - just the poster I've seen by itself catches my attention.
