Last year, in an interview with AMFM Magazine, Testament singer Chuck Billy offered a progress report on the band’s upcoming album, their follow-up to Titans Of Creation (2020, Nuclear Blast).
At the time, Chuck revealed, “On this record, I don’t wanna say the word ‘ballad’, but we wrote a slower song like we had back in the ’80s and ’90s that we wrote on this record. And it’s really awesome, really good. We’re gonna bring in a guest vocalist, Floor Jansen from Nightwish. She’s gonna sing on it with me.”
Now, in a new interview ahead of Testament’s Australian headline tour in June, guitarist Eric Peterson speaks with the Scars And Guitars podcast about the trek, as well as the band’s upcoming release, and says Floor Jansen won’t make a guest appearance.
Talking about Testament’s new record, Peterson reveals, “I’m really excited about the new record. It’s really got… there’s some ‘Gathering’ stuff on there, there’s some New Wave Of Heavy British Metal stuff that’s like in A that’s got that typical kind of old, you know, I don’t wanna say Saxon, but some of those cool music that’s in A. A really good ballad. There’s some really crazy black metal stuff on there, but Testament. Yeah, it’s gonna be a good one.”
Asked if it’s true that they have Floor Jansen coming onto the album, Eric adds, “No, that’s not gonna happen. It was something that was being discussed, and I think it got out there before it was agreeable. And I think she got a little upset, from what I was told. I don’t know. This is all hearsay for me. But, I think it was too much. And she’s, like, ‘I didn’t even… I mean, I was talking about.. yeah, but I don’t…’ She would’ve been great on this song, by the way. This song would’ve been perfect for her. And then we were, like, ‘Let’s find someone else.’ And I’m, like, ‘If anybody’s gonna do it, it’s gonna be her. And if not, just…’ Chuck [Billy] sounds great on his own on it. It’s a ballad. It’s really good. It doesn’t really need another singer, but it could have been cool with Floor.”
