Nigriscent Palace Of The Black Light
Blackthrone Productions BLKTH002 2002
By Russell Garwood
One man metal project Nigriscent hails from the UK, and plays black metal with occasional ambient, symphonic tracks thrown in to add variation. For the most part the music is poorly produced, comprising tinny yet reasonably melodic guitars, blast-ridden, scathing drums and caustic witch screams. These are juxtaposed by several cleaner-sounding instrumentals which consist primarily of layered synths, and provide a welcome break from the sustained onslaught of the rest of the album.
The eleven tracks of "Palace Of The Black Light" are, for the most part, a ferocious, writhing mass of extremity, and as such relatively inaccessible. Nevertheless I see this release attracting many fans of stripped down, traditional black metal it could easily have been recorded in 1993, not a decade later. The occasional symphonics are a nice touch which sets Nigriscent apart from many similar bands, but still unless you are a fan of the "true" ambience the production could put you off what is otherwise a solid release..
