i fucking love this band

no edits were done, no strip silence, no manually gating (cutting toms, kick, snr etc), no slip editing blah blah blah

drums arent edited, and no samples have been used whatsoever... it was a struggle as the drummer is a very dynamic player and as we all know, dynamics arent the best thing in death metal drumming. getting the kick to come through has been a test. the snare and toms have had so much carving they all sounded like balls before.

about 4 hours into mixing, heaps of bits are missing

guitars were mesa triple rectifier and 5150mkii through mesa oversized and orange ppc412. played twice on each side. i dont remember if say it was orange on one side and mesa cab on the other or one on each side with each head. each cabinet was mic'd with 2 57s one on axis and the other off. guitars used were emg loaded ibanez and esp mh1000 also with emgs. bbe green screamer in front of both amps. leads could have been the 5150 or recto, cant remember, we also used a bogner shiva, an orange ad30 and a few other marshalls for leads. no reamping, it is how it was tracked

vocals were a rode classic mkii into avalon 737sp, dont remember what we used for bass, i think it was one of those black fender jazz 'metal' basses.

it has been an interesting excursion into straying away from the use of samples and podfarm and whatnot, which i found very testing and challenging, but is a very slow, humbling and fun experience. its amazing how much you start to get anxious when you look at the drums and pretty much nothing is exactly on the grid as you would normally do it...

comments greatly appreciated...

Cant seem to get it to play back :( but thank god! someone doing things properly.
I love the open and natural sound of well made records that are real. Theres an art and finesse to it which I feel is being lost in todays "bedroom studio" world.

Credit to you my man! \m/ \m/

Sounds very good, but I think the snare needs to stick out a little more, maybe add a bit more highs? Also, orange only clips please :D

I don't like the kick drums sound, tbh. The click (more like slap) is pretty annoying. Everything else sounds great thought :) But the kick is pretty distracting. And no it's not too bright (except for the kick). The guitars sound awesome :)

And I think it's awesome that the whole song is unedited, that's how things should be.

...did I mention the kick? :D Don't want to offend you, but I really don't like it. Listening Sennheiser HD595's, if that matters.

Sorry about the kick gaiz. As it completely natural it was so hard to get it to pop through. I compd it, clipd it, and I was still struggling with getting some kind of more even dynamic to get it to cut. Any more suggestions? I think I could shape the low end a bit more and clean it up down there, maybe sculpt the mods in it a bit more to get some attack and clarity with out the 'slap' as Allan (edit:sorry, as fama put it) put it lol. I know the kick definitely annoyed me.

Yeah, I understand completely. Does it absolutely have to be 100% natural? Maybe a little reinforcing on the kick? I endorse the philosophy behind "Hey, let's use natural drums for a more dynamic & realistic approach!", but not the one behind "We won't use samples because." if it hurts the song/mix.

No no, i did it deliberately as an exercise to see what was necessary, difficult, near impossible. I'll try staging some more compression in the kick to even things out even more. Would love more clarity from the toms, I think I'll have to crank some more level or upper mids into them.

Does anyone like the guitars?

Hey man, my internet is capped until the end of the month, and I'm off to bed before the cunt will finish loading.
Can definitely give it a listen in the morning (like, later this morning after i wake up, not morning right now haha), so I'll have time for it to load up completely.

Finally got to listen to it. Been a mad couple of days.

OK, for me (I think its already been said) the kick is way to high and is distracting alot from the awesomeness of the rest of it. The Snare gets lost in a few places so try and bring the kick back and up the snare. Maybe add a little snap to it in the 5K area and a little top at 10k just to give the snare some air.
Guitars could probably use a hintette of 4k just to give them a tadd more presence but the overall tone is awesome.

Nicly done! \m/

Thank you Graham for taking the time to come back and listen. The kick has been annoying me alot in the car systems I've been checking it in. The low energy is also a bit beachbally I'm feeling. Defintely feel you on the snare. I'll try adding some more air to the direct track and pump a bit more into the room and ohs, I'm pulling slot of the snap from there. The snare itself was very boxy sounding.

It's not so much the snare getting lost sometimes as it is the playing dynamics getting it quite lost due to lack of velocity lol. There's even a few accidental rims in there and whatnot, I might bump it a tad though. Perhaps back off the gating, as it may be ducking a few ghost notes, and chain up some more compression. Not happy with the bass yet as I've hardly touched it.

It's a great mix in the style and a overall good performance as well.

However and just considering you said no edit was done on the drums I've got the impression the drummer timing is sometimes a bit too much in front of the guitars, especially on some breaks at the beginning and later some kicks are sometimes too behind (around 1:00 for instance). I'd personnally suggest to edit those tiny details. But it's still impressive. Those guys know their shit for sure.

Guitars are really thin and a bit nasally IMO, and everything sounds like it's been hi-passed at 150. Agreed with the complaints on the kick, but while I think the vocals are too loud, they sound great. Snare is really muffled IMO, might wanna bite the bullet and blend in a Slate sample for some snap/pop. The vox are the highlight of the mix though IMO!

No biting the bullet, if I bailed now and just used samples that'd be defeating the purpose. Perhaps I should back off on clamping the low mods in the guitars. I quite liked the guitar tone. Will adjust vocals, hopefully be able to get back into it in the next few days.

FYI, this is an old song by some friends I'm just remixing for fun. Was the first project I ever worked on about a year ago. So I'm not really concerned about 'pleasing clients'.
