Favela of My Dismay
The Descent, Saw, The Changeling, Uncle Tom goes to Montana, etc etc. I'm sick of having my intelligence insulted by swiss cheese plot lines. Is there anything along the lines of Se7en, which is more of a thriller than horror I know. But is there anything out there that is actually goose bumpingly frightening, aswell as intelligently written?

:erk:

P.S I'll prob receive a good Japanese reco, but just be warned. I found Audition to be quite lame.

:loco:

@TheGreatDeceiver: I hope you are joking. I never understood why people consider the original "Wickerman" a horror movie either, it's just a pagan/folk/musical "thriller" movie.

Intelligently written?

OK so let's start with the Japanese stuff. Assuming you've seen The Ring remake, forget seeing Ringu (the original). Now if you haven't seen the American remake, absolutely rent the original.

The same director also did Dark Water. Again, avoid the remake at all costs -- the original Japanese version is truly excellent.

(You should enjoy both those even if you didn't like Audition).

Also, you MUST check out Guillermo del Toro's The Devil's Backbone. I've been plugging this guy's work for years now. As you might have seen, he also recently directed Pan's Labyrinth and it's supposed to be oscar-worthy.

Shame you didn't like The Changeling. However, keeping in line with all things George C Scott (because there's no denying he's one of the greatest American actors of all time), you really should see The Exorcist 3. Totally underrated, and superbly written. It also takes on the 'serial killer' vibe so since you liked Se7en, you should love this fucker.

Here's a long shot to round up my five for you......consider Event Horizon. I've only seen it once but remember liking it very much. I've since heard people say it's one of their favoUrite. Amazingly, it's written by Paul S Anderson, the same cunt who ruined Aliens vs Predator and the Res Evil series, but somehow he got it right for this one. Again, it's got that same 'crusty' feel to it as Se7en, in fact, when watching it, I was reminded of the same creepiness I felt whilst playing the first Silent Hill all those years ago.

So there you have it:

Ringu
Dark Water
Devil's Backbone
Exorcist 3
Event Horizon

The first half of Exorcist III is fucking hilarious, actually. But THE SCENE in the hospital is one of the all time best creepy scenes in movie history...

Event Horizon = Teh Win. When I went to see it in the theater, I thought it was just a space movie. When my g/f at the time showed up at the theater with a TEDDY BEAR to hold because she hates scary movies, I knew something was up... the cast is great, too. "Fuck this ship!"

Intelligently written? Check out early Cronenberg stuff. A bit out there. :D Hard to believe he's a "real" Hollywood director these days, but he still gets his gross shit in.

Two not-exactly-horror-but-will-fuck-your-world-up: Cannibal Holocaust and I Spit On Your Grave. That shit's just WRONG, man.

ROSEMARY'S BABY SUCKS. IT SUCKS IT SUCKS IT SUCKS. Spoiler: "paranoid paranoid paranoid no no no no please no no no run run aggh... well, ok then, I'll go along with it." WTF?

Original Texas Chainsaw for creatign an atmosphere that has yet to be duplicated ...

Poltergeist, although watched it recently and it didn't hold up that well over the years.

HOSTEL :kickass:

THE OTHERS was great ... especially if you have a good 5.1 system

REQUIEM FOR A DREAM

I'll reiterate Devil's Backbone. Not only is it well written with a great storyline, it's also beautiful just to look at. I know they study this at the NY film academy in terms of cinematography.

Case in point:

John Ryder: Gas stations have cigarettes.
Jim Halsey: What about gas?
John Ryder: I don't need gas.
Jim Halsey: What do you want?
Jim Halsey: What's so funny?
John Ryder: [Stops Laughing] That's what the other guy said.
Jim Halsey: What other guy?
John Ryder: That guy back there, the one we just passed. The guy who picked me up before you did.
Jim Halsey: That was him in there?
John Ryder: Sure it was. He couldn't have walked very far.
Jim Halsey: Why's that?
John Ryder: Because I cut off his legs... and his arms... and his Head. And I'm going to do the same to you.
