I'm just curious about this because I've struggled with it for a long time. So I'll notice while listening to any decently mixed song that it's typically enjoyable at any volume. I understand that we perceive things as more impressive for lack of a better word when the volume is up, but I can barely stomach my mixes when they are on a low volume.

Is this a matter of balance? Should I be paying more attention to my meters and attacking things with 'perceived volume' with appropriate eq and/or multiband comp and other tools of that nature?

I guess in short is.... What causes this problem and how the balls do I fix it?

Generally if you can make a mix sound great at low volume, then it will only get better as you listen to it louder.

That was my understanding anyway

aj Fletcher-Munson curve shows, louder the music is, better it sounds because it's frequencies and dynamics sound more "flattered" ...Sometimes I have the same problem with my mixes too. But volume balancing on the threshold of audibility helped to get my mix to relative balance
