I normalize before mastering.
Or if a track is just recorded too low and you need the fader at +12 for it to be of any use. IN that case I'd normalize to -6 or -8.
well, everything has its uses.
if you only want to make your mix hit 0db, without using any maximizer
some tv channels normalize their programs at -5db, etc... nothing is useless
something i've tried recently: i used the gain poti on the cubase sx mixer (right above the fader) to make ever channel hit 0db if the fader is set to zero. is that good or bad? i just figured thats what i'd be doing if i was mixing live...
I do use Pro Tools Gain audiosuite tho (kind of similar to normalize) on drum samples. Use it to match original velocities between hits and building snare/tom parts.
I've erred on the side of safety to avoid clipping and recorded direct guitar/bass tracks at volumes that end up being pretty low. Sometimes I normalized them to give more volume, which means less is needed from the amp's gain.
