Got one amongst other things for XMas from the 'rents. Gotta say it delivers the goods just like the NT2-A I used every day at the studio, minus the roll-off, pad, and pattern options of course. Stacks up nicely against my TLM103...makes me wonder why I spent so damn much on a Neumann in the first place :\

Anyway, I'm off to test it out on my vintage Gibson acoustic

For the money, it's nice. Since getting an AT4050 though, my nt1a just sits on my hihats. The nt1a was my first LDC. I tried it on everything. I've found, it's way too harsh (sibilance) for vox, acoustic sounded decent, 4x12 sounded good for clean and leads, blended with 57 tracks. That 4050 is my ALL TIME FAVORITE mic, though. The nt1a is a good first LDC, though for $200.

It's super awesome to get a kind gesture from family, so I'm not trying to be a dick...but man that mic sucks badly. I'd take it back to the store and get something else. For just a little over $200, you can get a Heil PR-40 and even though it's a dynamic mic it will run circles around the Rode. I'd also sell that TLM 103 because it's the winner of the biggest mic ripoff award. If you want a quality Neumann, you're gonna have to spend double what the 103 costs.

How are these mics (condensors) on guitar cabs?? I know that sounds general as hell, I just want a step up from using SM-57s. Good mic, but to me has that harsh high end and makes my recordings sound too thin. Wasn't sure what pros used on guitar cabs.

If a guitarist uses the exact same tone for leads and rhythm, you can get a different tone by throwing a condensor on a cab, for the leads and shit. I will recommend an AT 4050 to you for a condensor. That mic will give you a boner for sure!

If your 57 has too harsh high end then try repositioning it - angled away from the cone, or moved more towards the edge
